Polo GTI 2016 Broken Turbo - Penny Valve Issue - Need Advice

Post by bazrh »

Hello, Im in a tough spot with my Polo GTI and looking for some advice please. Ive owned the car since new.

Its a Polo GTI 66 plate with 30k miles. I have complete loss of power (EPC light on), broken cruise control and no start stop so I took it to the garage and they are saying that there is an issue with the penny valve in the turbo (I think they said its not closing properly).

Its not the actuator as they said that its still moving itself. They are saying I could get a second hand turbo replacement and are quoting £1800 to buy a second hand turbo + labour. Although they did state they aren't sure of the exact car part for the turbo which Id have thought would be clearly stamped on the turbo.

OR have the turbo sent away for repair (they are going to get a quote for me) OR sell the car. Autotrader is estimating the value to be £10,494 to £13,450, we buy any car quoting £8,500.

I am by no means a mechanic so looking for advice on what to do here. I feel like the car has a lot of life left in it with only having done 30k miles so part of me feels Id be better off investing in getting it fixed than selling and getting an unknown second hand car.

What would you do here? And does anyone know the exact turbo I would need for replacement (IS12?) or anywhere they recommend for repairing the turbo in the UK?

Thanks.

I don't know which turbo is on your car, so I'll leave that side of things to others, but, as you know this car, I'd suggest that getting this turbo repaired must be the way forward.

Try to locate a proper car fixing place that knows about these engines and turbo.

Edit:- maybe chat to a VW Group Indie near you and certainly not a VW main dealership.
