My mk4 problems with 17's

Post by jags53 »

i know this is the 100th post about 17's lol
i got some 17's tsw razors with yokohama 205/40/17 a539's,with a standard suspension ,fitted them on and all okay, but at the back, the black plastic thing rubs against the tyres,it does fold back more, but how can i get it to stay there?

and then from my front lef tthe wheel started to make funny sounds it like a high pitched chime sound,i dont know if the new tyres have killed something in the brakes, but i didnt exceed over 30mph,im not sure if its the brakes or what,i took it to garage but they said they are busy come back wednesday,

so i stuck my 15's back on and i still do get the high pitched/grinding chime sounds,i kind of sounds like when my brake pads completly went, but i just changed a few months ago so cant be them, how much am i looking at a decent pair of brakes? if that is what wrong with them.

anyone please help.
cheers

If you still have the noise up front with the 15" wheels, it could be the brakes. If the noise goes away when you got rid of the 17's it's definately the wheels. The could be grinding somewhere (most likely on the suspension arms) and that's not good at all.

I'd advise you and everyone else to stay away from:

A. All wheels made by TSW.

B. Oversized wheel and tyre combinations.

Sorry to be of little help, but they're just too big.

really?are tsw wheels bad or something?
im hoping the suspension is okay, its only the left

what about everyone else with 17's have you changed anything on the car, because of them,(not including suspension)

also does anyone know how to fold the back plastic lining, and push it outwards,as it folds inwards?

Not sure if my car is relevant, as its a MK5, but my 17"'s are Momo Italy's.

They fit fine, all be it the might rub a bit if u go over a heavy bump at speed lol

The only other thing with them is that, when reversing on full lock u can hear the wheel catching the lining of the arch, not that its a biggie as you can replace that after a year of scraping nice and cheaply.

I was also advised that TSW's arnt too good on small cars, not sure why though !

Im sure the MK4 would look PHAT with the 17"'s though !

cheers for the reply mate, gave me hope,
they did look v.nice, even on a standard suspension, just got to stop the back wheel from scrubbing against the plastic,is an upgrade in brakes absolutley neccessary,as i my discs were very very hot, burnt my hand, but then again i dont know if that is always the case,i only use the car on the weekends and to goto work in the weekdaysd, dont really, race it or anything.

Re A: TSW stands for Terribly Soft Wheels in the trade - they will buckle with minimum effort - absolutely s**t quality control and alloy is lik butter

Re B: I love this bit - so it's OK with undersized wheel & tyre combinations - it's a Joke Alex - don't take offence

My view is simple if you want to change wheels and tyres then it's fine as long as you are prepared to put in the research to make sure whatever you are fitting fits first time......

you'll need a sharp pencil, calculator and a tape measure and a rudimentry understanding of the concept of clearances

Going down to your local motorspares place and saying will those wheels fit my car is a recipe for disaster - they will normally sell you anything as long as the bolt holes line up which is about where they feel their responsibilities lie.

If they are too inset (or tucked) will try to sell you spacers

If they are to Proud - they will tell you that your arches need to be rolled

I keep meaning to do a summary post in one of the sections explaining how to and with some illustration pictures and links to help people but time keep conspiring against me!!!! It would probably help to solve a lot of the questions that come up on wheel/tyre combinations but then again some people who post just want to be told "it will be alright" even if it's not gonna be!!!

Haha!

Smaller is better, naturally. Less rubbing. Quicker acceleration.

:D

(No offence taken btw)

To stop plastic mud arch rubbing at back - put small hole in plastic and put a bit of welding wire through and attach driver side to toe hook and other side to bumper - simple!

17" s rock. wouldn't change mine for the world!
