Aerowipers

Hi all. Guess you've all come across the aerowipers that have been fitted to lots of newer cars? Well I spent a while looking for the right arms, as you need to change these to fit the wipers. The passenger side is quite easy, but the drivers side wasn't. In the end I thought that there could be a bit of a niche in the market as regards fitting the aerowipers to ANY wiper arm.

The advantages to having the aerowipers are many. Such as, much lower profile, hardly seen from inside when parked, lower wind noise, they don't jump, skip, or make a noise at all or get lose mechanisms. Its the 1st time the wipers have been redesigned since about 1930! Oh yeah they look cool too.

As I've just spent 56k on a new CNC milling machine and some cad software I thought I'd make some test pieces, and instead of making something useless, I thought I'd make something I could use. So I made some adapters to fit standard wiper arms. They are made form Aluminium, and I was going to anodize them black, but I might leave them silver now that I have seen them fitted. You can then use standard Polo aerowipers from Halfords that cost about £18.99!

I'm thinking about approaching a small engineering company to do a small production run of these, maybe 50 Pairs. I will need to change the design a bit, mine are nice, but a bit tricky to machine, I even thought about engraving [JWC Design] into them just to take the p***.

Probably cost my establishment about 3 grand in machine, my time and general pissing about, but they work 100% perfect.

Oh yeah, I'm now pretty good with the software and the machine! :)

And from inside they are really low profile, you can just see the tops. They also seem to be far less annoying when they are in use. Anyway, it was just about worth the effort.

I'm currnetly invoved with Defence Technology Centre working on Wearable computer systems. I design the hardware, the electronics, the software and the integration of the systems. BuT i like to play with the nitty gritty, like go to the workshop and do stuff myself.

So how are the mounts fitted to the arms?

Kudos on the work by the way!

excuse me for sounding blunt, but what's the rave about these aero wipers? are they better than standard mk5 ones? they just look abit out of place on a mk5, i think rear window aero wiper would be nice, but mixed views on the front wipers :?
are the rear wipers easy enough to fit? .. anyone?

not quite a straight swap, you need to cut down the wiper blade a little bit on the rear one.

first time i've ever heard of aero wipers. what exactly is the difference? also on dubpolo's pic, it looks like they're so small that they won't even wipe the full height of the windscreen!

I'd taken my rear badge off for colour coding, the black bit in the middle the same colour as the car! looks cool now! I was thinking about smoothing but wanted to keep it looking abit more standard.

The blades are the same length/size as the old ones, they will sweep the same area as the original wipers IIRC. Basically, they look mighty fine, no real performance gains. They just look good! 8)

You usually find aero wipers on Bora/Golf/Passat/Touran etc models, they've been fitted as standard for a couple of years now. Mum & Dad's old '99 Bora had "normal" wipers, their replacement '02 52-plate Bora has aero wipers...

paint

Post by jon_poloV »

nope didnt do the front myself nor my delocked handles or roof spoiler, to be honest i really wanted to get the rear badge doe proffesionally, i think that things people spray themselves that i have seen never are as good. also dont last as long.
at the end of the day all the effort that goes into the car to make it look good and clean etc the paintwork needs to be top notch.
just my thoughts
