Ian's 1.4 16V MkV - mods start next weekend

Post by Ian »

Ok had the car two weeks now. Mods start next week with the following:

Stage 1.
Wheels/boots: trying to get some VW Barcelona or San Marino 16" from dealer - rubber not sure, mate tells me Toyo are good - either way 205's. ...if all fails with VW will fit BBS 16V type.

But this will be first along with...

Suspension. Going for -30 drop all round and fitting Koni ride height adjustable

It has discs all round at minute so I'm not bothering with them until I get more advice what to do with engine.

Stage 2.
Next on list (June/July) engine - nothing to drastic as it's the missus' car. At same time will change grill, rear lights (what do you think of crystal on this blue). Then a few tarty up bits for the interior and that's it for now. Then discs - someone tells me Tar-ox is the one.

Am I doing anything wrong - I'm new to this so please tell...

Any ideas for the engine would be good...as would grill.

Stage 1 hope to have finished end May. Stage 2 June/July.

Will post pics as to progress...incidentally - when I do why can I only see red x ?

Are you sure about those 205's? I figured 195 were spot on.

Other than that, it sounds like a plan!

Thanks speedlaw.

I'm new to this so as much a case of suck it and see so to speak (if my wallet can stand a battering).

I plan to take all the advice I can get from this forum - it's great - you guys know your stuff so where better. I'm checking the DIY guide - some great stuff in there.

I plan to do as much to this polo as possible myself...but I have some friends more akin to this type of work - best hand it to them but most I am (prepared)  to take on myself.

On the tyre front, my brother in law is a tyre fitter so will get his outfit to do wheels and shocks

I just want the car to look good (not daft) - something about the Polo - just luv em 8)

this sentance wakes my head hurt because the konis are coilovers so if you want -30 then youi set them to there but if you want slammed mode then jack up the car and spin the wrenches and your -90

Bang goes that idea then...was just on my way to the dealers.

You guys know a lot more than me about this kind of stuff...so help me along here - remember this car is for my wife, having it sooo low will be bad news.

I just want to take it down a bit, fit some pucca looking alloys, do some mods on the outside - rear badge, grill, lights, boot spoiler, do some bits on the inside (like the domelight). Then do some things to the engine.

What should I fit for the suspension, and alloys ?

If I can afford it, I may take on a project for myself - ie get me a Polo MkV and do some drastic stuff.

I had a MkIV before this and it was so sweet. You guys might be able to help me here. It was 1996 P reg, 1.4CL Dragon Green - had alloys(15" (195/50)), lowered suspension, green lights, boot spoiler (with green light) - this was all done at the dealers when I bought it in 96. I traded it in for the blue one I have now.
The engine was absolutely fantastic - I'm not sure if it was 8v or 16 - someone tell me...anyway - it was so quiet and a lot more powerful than the 16V one I have now (75Bhp) (mind it only has a couple of K on the clock so not really run in yet) - quite often I would be cruising in 3rd doing 60 or so and not even notice - and standing start 1,2,3 was amazing...I wish I could buy the car back just for the engine

Anyway, give me some help here - just wanna do the right thing (by the missus)

The 1.4CL would have been an 8v... Only 60bhp but about 87lbft of torque.

I had a '99 model 1.4CL and I always thought the engine fealt a lot more powerful than the quoted 60bhp.

Anyway, if I was in your position, I would do the following:

K&N Panel Filter
Power System Power Box (email me for more info if you're interested!)
If not already done: Colour-Code the rubbing strips
H&R or Eibach 35mm Sport Springs
15" Alloys with 195x45x15 Tyres (Toyo's are cheap and amazing performance)
Roof Spoiler
Shorten the stock antenna
Hella Colour Magic Blue rear light clusters
Crystal side repeaters and clear front indicators
Kamai Mesh Grille
Colour-Code the black plastic bit of the rear VW badge
Audi TT Pedals
Passat W8 Interior Courtesy Light
Polo 9N Rear Aero Wiper

That'll be a nice polo then!

If you still want more:
Side Skirts and Chin Spoiler
Stainless Cat-Back Exhaust

There you go...

The Polo will remain useable (ie, not too low and wheels a reasonable size!) but will look great.

If you need any help doing any mods, we're here to help!

If your interested i might be selling my side skirts. They've been chopped to fit off a Mk3 Golf GTi, and look like larger versions of the originals.

Have a look at my car in Member's Rides.

On the lowering front, if your having 15'' alloys a drop of 60mm will probably look best - 90 will be too extreme and you probably won't notice 30mm

Thanks guys,

I like the sound of Josh's ideas - just enough to make it difference. You guys know your stuff. 8)

I'll see how it goes with suspension...one thing I can assure you all of - I will be coming to you for help

As I say, this one is for the missus.

If I can afford it I'm gonna get A MkV for myself and do some of the more extreme things you guys do - just for fun - me you see, almost mid-life crisis - need a release from Work, mortgage, bills, wife, and kids - this stuff has got me hooked...and don't I just love the Polo.

I'm also gonna try to track down my old MkIV - somewhere in the country - I'd like to buy it back. Here's the details, if anyone sees or hears of it let me know:

1996 P 1.4CL Dragon Green...roof spoiler, 15" 5 star, hella green lenses - back, front and on roof spoiler - reg P223 UCU

Oh one other thing for mod...have any of you seen the SpaceBall gear stick on S60 - I have one on mine (£75 option) - me thinks this might be a nice mod for Polo - especially with the numbers in LED - though it would have to be modified somewhat as reverse is to the rear on Volvo - it's sprung just like VW - push down - Polo 2K you are good with anything - I'm sure you could knock something up 8) 8) :D

Sorry, I don't have digital camera at home however:
Here is a picture. Image (image 7)
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4290158343

Description...all silver plastic and metal. Gear lever sits on a ball dome and this moves in relation to gear stick. The surround has gear selections at the back and front of it stamped in (recessed) - this is where I was thinking they could be LED underneath. It's a neat bit of kit 8)

I'll get digi cam next week and take some photos of it which will be clearer.

I'll try and hit you up on msn
