Help needed with new steering lock, lock washer etc

I have just had my steering lock bust by some inconsiderate g*t-bag and need to renew it. I've got the steering wheel off and the column switch but not sure what the lock washer is or the best way to get it off as I've been told this needs to come off to renew the steeriing lock.
The car I have is a '89 Polo Fox.
Could any body tell me the best way to go about this.
