what width are the wheels for starters?
4.5, 5, 5.5 inch, or more?
(if they're standard VW kit, then i think if you take one off and look on the inner side of the rim, near the hub, there'll be a short set of codes printed there including 4.5J, 5J, 5.5J, whatever...)
going purely by mk3s...
if 4.5" (squareback & 1.0 coupe standard) then its about 165 section - and you cant get so much wider than that under a square's rear arch without rolling it anyway.
5.5" (1.3 coupes) can be taken to about 185
any wider than that and you'll be needing bigger wheels and possibly arches, though thats really plenty wide enough for a polo.
at least get some 155s on there, or 165
i'm guessing yours are likely to be 4.5 if there's 145s on there - thats about the minimum you could get on a 5.5 inch wheel without stretching.

Hi Gareth, what wheels have you got?
They are ENZO cups ET38 basicaly fake RH cups as a couldnt find a genuine set.
I am sure they are 14"x6"s and they rubbed on the passenger side so bad at speed they made a rub marked ring on my tyre. So a had to roll ma rear arches so a didnt get a blow out. The fronts fitted until a got G40 brakes then they didnt fit - as the calipers were too wide so a now have 3mm spacers at the front. Nothing is ever simple. I am dreading lowering it 40mm. Makes me wish a bought a coupe sometimes.
