Insurance Questions

Post by wul3er »

Could someone please answer a question for me.

Heres the scenario. I have 2 previous convictions, my gf has been driving for nearly 3 years and is over 21 with nearly 3 NCB.
We have been getting silly quotes for my GT, with both me and her as first driver. So could i take a policy in h er name and put any driver as the second.
So that i could still drive it, or does the any driver have to have their own policy.

No, the 'other named driver' need not have a policy of their own, I was driving my mother car for over six years (I know how embarrasing!) and was named as an additional driver but never had a policy of my own.

However, I would point out that I regret this because now I have to start building up my NCB from fresh and at 27 and getting quoted silly prices for cars that others who have many years NCB are getting it relatively a lot cheaper.

I work in just the right business for you my dear, any questions throw them my way.

Very few insurance companies will give your gf a policy if the car is owned and registered by you... it would only work if she was your spouse. beside the fact that you will not be entitled to ANY ncb if you later decided to strat up your own policy. The best way to do it is keep ringing round for quotes till you get something reasonable and stick by that till you lose your convictions....

i found this company quite good when i wanted to insure my mk1 golf gti 16v conversion at 20yrs old when i had passed my test 1day. Premier tel no. is 01207592222 they are a north east based very small company but everyone i know praises them for drivers young/old/bald/or with convictions..

failing that brentacre are quite good, speak to john he's very helpful ask him anything 01792650933..

trust me keep the car in your name and insire it yourself cos you'll be better off in the long run even if it does seem pricey at the mo next year it could drop severely..

i hope that answers your question, if not ask away again i'm all ears and qualified in this particular sport :D

just to give you an idea, i bought my mk1 6 months before i passed my test and got quotes around £1100 then passed my test and it more than doubled, couldn't get a quote for less than £2500. i rang premier and they said £1064 brentacre weren't far off either but everyone else was far too high.

bear in mind i was a brand new driver, aged 20 with a fully converted mk1 16v.... i think that quote was mint. now i'm paying in the region of £500 only 3 yrs ncb under my belt. it's always best to earn your own cos if you insured it in your lasses name then transfered it later they would still sting you...

Cheers for the help.

I might HAVE to get her as the first driver even if i dont build up a NCB just now that wouldnt bother me. So registering her would be ok.

What i was wanting to do was Get her set as the first driver and then any driver as a second, so that i could still drive it and so could anyone else as long as they had her permission. I'm not even sure if you can get this type of insurance but i think i heard people doing things like that before.

Although when speaking to one of my mates he thinks that for that type of policy the other driver (ie. me) would have to have there own policy on another vehicle.

I have even tried with her dad as the first driver, and he has more than 9NCB and been driver since............ well forever but still as soon as i mention my convictions it rockets.

I've also just reliased that ive been screwed with the convictions as well. but thats another story

the car has to be insured by the owner and registered keeper, meaning adding another driver to the history of the car then another one again if you want it back n your name, then as long as the people who you want to be able to drive the car have fully comp insurance IN THEIR OWN NAME and it doesnt state EXCLUDES DRIVING OTHER CARS in the terms and conditions of their own policy then they can drive the afore mentioned car third party only on their own policy, NOT YOURS. But their insurance must be in their own name not a named driver on someone elses policy. beware of people who drive for a living as it probably does exclude driving other cars.

the main problem with the question is that the policy holder has to be the main driver of the car, and any named drivers taking up significantly less than half of the mileage isnt it?

i used to be on my mothers insurance as the named main driver of the car

any incidents where i was at fault had a much higher excess to pay

(and of all insurance companies it was norwich union...)

the car was registered in my dads name

a couple of years back i'd driven the car, which i was driving every day, to work and parked it in a car park, like i did every day.

that day it got broken into.

when i phoned the insurance company they told me i had to pay the higher excess rate.

the simple question posed was: "was it my fault the car was broken into?"

eventually they backed down.

so watch out for toss pot treatment like that

(the year after they wouldnt touch me, so i got the car put into my name, my insurance and rang trident, now insured with ensign for the 2nd year)

For an 'any driver' policy I think CIS are the only ones that do that and are pretty reasonable for that too.

when I was with CIS, I insured my mini in my mom's name with an any driver policy, with an 'under 25' clause included. They were cheaper than all the others I'd tried at the time. Although insuring it in my own name they didnt really want to kknow!

Now I've got this car in my name I still add my mom on as a second driver, even though she never drives it (and doesn't live at the same address), it still saves me money (cos she's old i guess!)
