Appeal: Anyone fancy a mk2 ranger?

Post by Tahrey1043 »

Got told of this one yesterday and took a gander earlier this evening thru the scrappy gates

local yard to me has got a burgundy mk2 ranger in - twin lamps, roof bars, trims, the lot. f-reg.

looks in quite good nick, at least what i could see of it in the streetlights

anyone fancy rescuing it?
or parts..... if it turns out to be a write off (e.g. panels as yet hidden from view completely destroyed) i'm going to have the aerial at very least. could pick up e.g. wheel trims, grille, so on so forth. but my time is a bit squishy so might be better to go get yourselfs if i give the address..

comments awaited :D

If its for scrap get the steering wheel off it as its the same as a coupe S one and is nice and small. Im looking for one to put in my GT as I like the coupe s one thats in my ranger so much. It might have sports seats and a rev counter as well which will be worth a few quid. Although with it being an F reg you might find its got a "standard" interior, as VW got a bit less generous with the spec of the ranger as years went on, By G reg (my first car was a g reg ranger) All you got inside over standard was the coupe s steering wheel, whereas my C reg one has that plus sports seats, rev counter and a slide sunroof.

My D reg Ranger had sports seats, rev counter, S wheel and a tilting roof. I loved that car, until it decided to turn psychotic!

What'd it do, toxxin? Something along the lines of making you call everyone a "sh1tter" and repairing itself back to mint condition any time you had a knock?

BTW i got to take a look at it in daylight today, it appears to be *completely* mint, though of course i can only see it from a front-left quarter angle (however looking *through* it everything still appears to be straight). Naturally, as it's at a scrappers, there must be something wrong with it, but with an F-reg car it might be something so simple as a dodgy carb going at the same time as the petrol tank, or a knackered clutch, etc, which a less enthusiastic person might see as simply not worth the cost of repair. £100 fix for a £250 sale value, when something else might break next week, etc...

Might have to give em a call see if they're open late one day this week before they start breaking it. Could be a perfectly rescuable car (which i might buy on the cheap hehe and either sell on / fix / break myself)...

special wheels / trims, twin lamp grille and roofbars at the very least, i can see. oh, and a servicable radio aerial, but that's mine
if for any reason it's beyond salvage, i'll be checking the doors out as well :D

Was the ranger sold with the 4+E gearbox, btw? (got the evils from me mum when i mused about that, but someone else might want it :D)

Yep itll have the 8p box on there. Mines a C reg and its got one. (it was optional in '86 apparently) And the brochure for F reg lists the 5-speed as standard equpiment on the ranger. (it just so happens i have the vw range brochure for that year. :D

Theres nowt special about the wheels - unless its got a set of zolders on there.

Upon signing the documents for my previous Ibiza, it:

1) Split a brake hose, about 5 minutes after walking out of the dealer. Going 80 down a dual carriageway and coming to a roundabout to find you have no brakes was very scary!

2) Decided that it'd break its exhaust. The bodges to fix it failed, so I had to buy a replacement from the scrappy.

3) Blew my amp up.

4) Made a nice hole in the head gasket, filling Northampton with smoke.

Hehe I had my GTi sat on the drive with my old Mini for over a week before I sold the Min. when the buyer took a look around, the boot wouldn't open, despite working perfectly that very morning! Must have been spooked

I'll join the squareback appreciation society :D And I'd love a ranger.. although, I'd rather keep on working on mine until it magically turns into one ;)

Don't I just know it.. I got annoyed with my car a few days ago and called it a worthless piece of crap fit for the scrapyard, and told it how I was going to scrap it and replace it with a golf. Less than a week later and I find myself telling my friends to get out and push it into a parking bay! And I bet it's going to give me a huge mechanic's bill just to spite me. And one of the piston rings has just started leaking like a sieve..

Maybe I'll take that ranger after all ;)

I've just had a thought.. if you go back to the scrappy at some point, would you mind getting me the circuitry for the clocks? :) They usually want a fortune if you take the whole unit, but if you whipped the circuit board off (just a few bolts), they probably wouldn't even know what it was ;) Only if you're going back there obviously, but it would be a huge help if you could :)

depends if i can make it in there at a time when they're open

hell ive even forgotten to phone them during daylight hours 2 days on the trot...

thats an idea, if it's got a servicable engine, you could get yourself a train up here (the scrappy is literally 2 minutes relaxed stroll from a station on a main commuter line out of new street) and.... er....

cant remember quite what i was going to say there.

do something to it anyway. attach it to the back of the train maybe.

/lost the plot
