Amongst their rather stupidly predictable "best cars of the year" (encompassing the enormous gamut of "three each from Supermini, Sort-of-family-but-not-really and Unobtainable-supercars"), 5th Gear have pulled a surprise number and chosen the new GTI as their overall car of the year --- beating all three class winners of BMW 1 series (you gotta be kidding? no, seriously it won supermini class), focus and 911 carrera.
Must say it looked like immense, stupid fun, even if they didnt quite seem to have the requisite prestige to be given a DSG model. Appears to be incredibly chuckable and not the fat stodgy mess that previous models threatened it would be. Yay!
