I've just noticed Gareth's registration in his sig and my GT is also J***GNH.

Anybody else outthere? GNH's may well have been VW press cars...

Care to explain? How do you know they were press cars? These days they mostly seem to have private plates - letter, one number, then VWW - eg. S2VWW...

Look at age related press pics etc, in the same way you've come to the VWW conclusion. Circa 1997/8 the end letters were VWL.

VW used to be (may still be, I know they've moved their main spares warehouse) based in Milton Keynes. The three letters were location related, in this instance the middle 'N'. As the press office registered cars for publicity, road tests etc they'd have -N- plates such as GNH, GNV, BNH. BNV etc etc. I'm not saying anybody other than VW registered cars in that locality but that there's a good chance that they were registered by VW. Look back at old road tests, magazine articles, adverts etc and you'll see what I mean

These days they mostly have 'private' plates because they're available and 'desireable', back then they weren't; manufacturers didn't worry what the plate showed but as awareness rose they did things differently (e.g. VWL). If you look at most manufacturers ads/press cars these days they are either ageless or vehicle specific (such as RS02FUN on a Focus RS or M1CRA on a, er, I forget....).

Co-incidentally my brother's Vento VR6 is registered R29VWL; pity it's a 2.8! (R24VWL is local on a Polo).

they were all registered on the 1/8/91, first day of J plate. VW headquarters has something to do with it. (all registered at the same place hence the same reg, then shipped off around the uk to the various dealers) Theres loads of ppl with GNH plate GTs (they all seem to be GT's as well)

theres a chap (or possibly lass) round here with a good one - 767 in the middle...

It's different combos for different years, i remember from a different thread on a similar subject - J *** GNH, and a few others for the other years, always in the form year - three numbers, all combinations of which forming a fairly close group - and the same three letters, but those letters changing year on year.

Possibly a similar thing happened with the G40s and the more mundane CLs... though i think the CLs were monthly, or at least several times a year (mine is reg'd 1st feb 91, and i'm sure i've seen a couple with the same
H *** NOH combination and "close" numbers)

...again it includes N and H, but in a different order hehe

pity my old atari isnt running any more --- well to be more precise pity i cant remember what was on all my old ST Format cover discs (which i can run an emulator for). I had a nifty program that told you where a particular car was registered when you typed in the plate. Used it in about '95-96 i think, on a school field-trip project to see roughly where visitors to a national park had come from (before the days of having to put the garage name & postcode at the bottom). If i'm bored enough tomorrow i'll try to root out the originals, peek at the labels, then fire the emulator up and take any interested party's plate submissions

incidentally that computer will be 20 years old this year... damn!

Fortunately my local letter is 'K', easy to remember as I'm in Kent
