When I purchased the bottom side grille units, as fitted to cars with spotlights, I noticed that that air could flow freely through the fins. This apposed to the units that were fitted to my car, that are completely closed, thus preventing air from flowing through.
My question now is, is there a reason why the original units are closed...are they protecting something? Will I be damaging something now, allowing the air to go through?

Something to be concerned about... or not?

That has to do with engine bay ventilation really. Not only for vehicles with charge air coller, though.
All Brazilian Polos have open grilles, and my country is not exactly known for its ski resorts if you know what I mean.
Don't worry Ciden, you can get both open and closed grilles as tandard from VW. My car is the same model as yours (same 1.6L engine, and I believe your engine was made in S. Carlos, Brazil) and it has all front grilles open.
