Few niggles...

Post by Karl_CLCoupe »

I have encountered one or two oddities now I'm driving my car.

First up is tonight after driving it, so engine would be warm, I started the car up for the revs to rise. They then settled to normal within seconds. This happened twice. Anything to worry about?

Second is a rythmical squeaking I get at idle in time with the engine. It comes from the driver side of the engine bay so I'm thinking maybe an auxillary belt? It disappears with throttle. Again, anything to worry about?

Karl.

Revving when started, perfectly normal, just the ECU giving it an extra boost until it's settled into it's regular idle.. most cars will do that to an extent. If it's revving really high, I'd suggest you check your temperature sensor, it may be that the ECU thinks the engine's colder than it really is.

Squeaking / rattle / any vaguely odd noises coming from the driver side of the engine, check it out ASAP.. twice I've heard odd noises from that area, twice I've found a problem with the cam belt and that's not something you want to snap on you :? You could start by checking the condition of the cam belt and the alternator belt, make sure neither is rubbing on anything, make sure you water pump isn't falling apart like mine was. If it's a squeak I'd suspect it's just the alternator getting on a bit and nothing to worry about until you start losing voltage, but it's definately worth checking everything in that area anyway..

how high does it rev? never had an idle higher than about 1250 out of mine, even right off the key from cold...... can take several minutes to settle gradually down to the 800s from there however.

(the vox is a bugger for it, i can be most the way to work before it'll calm down from ~1500 to 750... very odd feeling putting it in 5th and getting a 30mph idle out of it :D ... could be a sticky ISV in both cases???)

When I get chance, will have to look at the squeaking. Its settled down for now, but does it now and again, think its temperature related.

Tain, Cars just passed 50k, so not sure whats due around then, as handbook has never been available.

Cheers all.

mine idles up at 2k from cold , try touching the throttle and it dips to about 500, battery and instrument lights go haywire, kicks itself vak up to about 1400, then after a minute or so will drop to about 900, fluctuating betwwne 900-975-900-975. i think its to do with ym golf AFM not being set p correctly though/

The next major service tends to be at 60k or thereabouts (on most cars, not sure about the polo specifically) and includes things like a cam belt and water pump change, so it may be that you've had the same belt and pump since it was produced.. definately worth checking out at least, even if it turns out not to be the problem, 10 years is a fair old time for a rubber belt to be hanging around ;)
