grinding noise when accelerating
Hi, i have just purchased a mk4 Polo as my first car after passing my test. It is an immaculate example of a 1.4CL which drives like new due to being garaged most of its life (until i got it). It drives perfectly until i noticed that it makes a grinding noise when revving the engine at round 2200 - 3000rpm and seems to be coming from around the drivers side of the bonnet somewhere. When the engine is driven in full thottle in dual carriageways it is more noticeable but goes away after you change down. Has any1 else expereinced this?? any1 know what might b wrong???

Hi thanks for that, it can be said to be a rattle. I turned by engine on 2day from cold. Not driven 2day. It is making the noise very slightly when idle as well, but usually when car vibrating i.e. when on biting point so could be rattle. What is the intake mount? what does it look like? i lifted the bonnet and found that the noise is coming somewhere around the belt, its the open belt near alternator. I dont think a cambelt would be open like this. Hoewever it is not the belt itself, its somewhere around there which is on the drivers side. is the intake mount anywheres around ere?? soz im still learning my way round parts of the engine.
Also if it is this can it be done myself or does a garage need to do this. if its minor i think i will do it myself with a bit of trial and error. Many thanks

thanks for your response, Is that a wheel bearing you meant?? sorry im not too good wid mechanical stuff yet, its my first car. Does this mean that it just needs lubricating or something, as yes accelerating i.e. wheels spinning faster..increases the noise. Is this something you can do on your own, or is this left to the pros. does it require having the wheel off?? many thanks

Yeah it may be the grille actually never thought of that. The front area has a bolt missing to the nut and so it quite shaky. The car had only done 38,000 miles and is an R Reg w/full vw history. So i don't really think (or hoping ) that it may be something expensive. However the owner told me it was front ended before and required a wing replacement. I noticed that the grille was a bit shaky, even the Vw badge was able to come out with a pull. I think i will try and fix this today if i have the time and see if it is this. thanks for your help
air intake!
had this on my mk 5 once, sounded crazy propper rattle, sorted it in the end thank god, sound as though it was coming from behind my dash!!Speedlaw wrote:The intake is actually right next to the belt cover, it's a tube going towards the wing from the back of the engine. Bit hard to explain. It's bolted to the chassis with a bolt-packed-in-rubber, but that bolt tends to get loose and starts to rattle.

Right my journey to Uni today on the dual carriageway. i sat there stereo off, trying to find the location of the noise. it sounds like its coming from the dash on the drivers side somewhere near the fusebox. It reacts when you acclerate full throttle mainly as well as when increasing speed. It stays mainly on the first and second gears at its loudest and only starts once over 2 on the rev counter, but then goes away when around 3 on rev counter. it is more of a internal noise, and cant hear it almost at all from outside. As i said sounds like its around steering column somewhere, but its not steering itself. I checked the bolts on my grille...they are loose, i checked the intake bolt (thanks for that) loose as well. I will tighten these 2day (but i doubt these make this noise..but then again u never know) and see what happens. Thanks to every1 for their help

Looking at what to tighten i found that the front wing was also missing a bolt (drivers side) and this was causing the whole panel above the bumper including the headlights to shake on the drivers side. So i replaced this with a old wing nut and took it for a small run. And guess what> the noise is gone. However, as it was raining, the road noise may have covered this sound so cant be definete. But im quite sure its gone and just shows how annoying small things like these can b. The intake nut was also loose, but i was not able to grap hold of the nut underneath with a spanner on the chassis. i removed one of the intake pipes temporarily to make space however this didnt do much. tried a plier, but still no luck. This is the most annoying thing i have ever found with this car...tightening this nut... probably try again 2moro...if its not raining.

yep that irritating noise is now gone for good. The grille part with the body colour that sits below the headlights, and the black grille part with vw badge is still quite loose and i cant find a way of tightening these. However the main thing is the noise is gone for good, and more importantly its gone for FREE, no labour charges
Thanks every1 for helping out especially speedlaw and ogdmx, appreciate this
