Uprated speakers

Post by Si_GTi »

I'm looking at upgrading my front and rear speakers in the GTi some time later on this year (after tints, B&M and lowering!), but I was wondering; if I spend some cash on some decent 6.5" speakers, swap them for the factory items, and simply run them off the standard veedub headunit, will I really notice much of a difference? Or should I look at amping them at the same time?

The plan is:

1. Buy uprated 6.5" mids to replace front and rear factory speakers, leaving factory tweets in place.

2. When affordable, have amp/sub professionally installed by an ICE specialist (I'm no expert), including amping the newer mids?

Will I benefit from simply upgrading the mids and doing nothing else?

Cheers

There will be an improvement in the sound quality, but you will be limited by the standard vw head unit. But for the time being its worth it as any improvement has got to be good.

personally i would go for an aftermarket headunit first.

this will improve the sound quality on the standard speakers for the time being if you have a tight budget.
next invest the uprated speakers, then you will get the full benefit from the headunit's build in amplifier.

you could then even get a small amp and run the speakers, to get the full potential from the speakers etc.

then look into sub and amp's to give the bass.

My only concern about buying and fitting an aftermarket headunit is that it can possibly become a target for theft, despite the wide availablility of flip/facae-off facias. Plus its hard to find one that will (a) fit in nicely with the blue/red colour scheme, (b) fit flush to the dash? And (c) control the OEM 6-CD changer in the boot. But feel free to point out some candidates for replacing the OEM unit if you've got any ideas!
