Exhaust Fumes

Post by lisaDJ »

Hi, I've recently bought me a Polo 6N, V reg, 99. Love the car although there is one thing that i'm a little worried about. I don't know if anyone else has had the same problem but here goes: when the car is stationary ie sitting in traffic etc, the fumes from the exhaust seem to be coming into the car from underneath. The tail pipe points down to the floor as you know so all the fumes are drawn back under the car and inside, when you have your fan/heaters on, it can be quite overwhelming.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem or have any ideas because I'd like to get it sorted asap.
Thx. :?:

Sitting in traffic it's more likely to be the fumes from the car in front than your own.......

Having said that a leak from you own exhaust directly under the car would result in fumes findings their way into your car but you'd hear it....

You might notice a bit of improvement if you replace the Pollen filter - that does a fairly good job of pulling prticulates out of the air that is blown into the cabin

It also pays to have the heater fan on the lowest speed possible to keep the windows clear

Turn your engine off in traffic jams and see if the situation improves - it probably wont make much difference if it's all coming from other cars

exhaust fumes

Post by lisaDJ »

Hi, thx for the reply.
However, when sitting in the car on my drive or anywhere with nothing in front with the engine running is when this is happening, I do actually HAVE to turn the fan off because it seems to choke you, obviously not good for anyone.
We wondered if having the tail pipe altered so that it points in a diffent direction (away from the car) would solve it.
Father in law has the same car and he also has the same problem, he was first to mention it and warned me that its best to turn off the fan when the car isn't moving. He also had a hole in his exhaust which he thought was causing it, he had it fixed, but it's made no difference what so ever.

Something isn't right then because the fresh air inlet is at the back of the bonnet in the scuttle pannel so if it is fumes from the exhaust at the back of the car have to somehow get all the way from the back of the car to the area just by the windscreen...... I'm sorry to say that even in the calmest of days I can't see that happening to cause you to notice fumes in the car........

Mind you if your pollen filter is a bad as the one I changed on my car when I bought it I'd reckon that this would make a big difference - mine was black and choked with dust and debris and had several large splits in it - it also stank of exhaust fumes so was actually adding smells to the air it was supposed to filter...

However the following could be causing it....

- holes in the firewall or bulkhead between the pasenger compartment and the engine bay - maybe amplifier cables badly fitted or fitted and now removed - split sealing boots on cables or wiring.

- My favorite would be the gaiter on the gearshift - not the one you can see - there is normally a rubber one underneath the leatherette one attached to the gear knob

Best I can do at this moment in time - hope it helps.....
