I learnt in a 1.5DCi Clio. Oh joy of joys  . Steering was dead, and the rattle from the engine at idle, and its supposed to be one of these new-fangled common-rail jobs. Was nice to thrash though.

I learnt in a 1.9 td escort. Was quite quick at some points, but the lag was terrible sometimes. Especially on roundabouts when u needed to get out quick

My driving instructor started off with a 5-door Peugeot 306 1.4. Was quite cool to drive in an old skool kind of way.

Then a week before my test he traded it in for a new Renault Clio 1.2. I found it really hard to get used to the overassisted steering and stuff, I was used to having to "drive" the car :D

Most powerful car I drove as a learner was a clio 1.6 rxe (my dad's).. 96bhp, nippy, but a vrs would have been heaven :D Also learnt in a clio 1.5dci (my instructor's) and a 2.5 td shogun (mum's).. neither of which were exactly fast :D Although, the dci was perfectly reasonable.. didn't like the clutch, brakes or steering on it at all, but the engine was pretty gutsy for a 1.5d..
