exhaust on g40??
exhaust on g40??
hey there, just bought a g40 k reg in black with 70000 miles on it and it has come with a kand n filter and full scorpion stainless system on it. i was going to put the original airbox back on as its drinking it a bit and was wondering wether to put original exhaust back on to help the back pressure,
also the charger has never been serviced yet so was wondering if that was urgent as i dont have the funds yetor should i just take it easy with my right foot fot the time being??
one more thing, brakes are the worst i have ever felt and was wondering if putting a larger servo on it would make a difference??
many thanks
joe

If it's drinking fuel it might be overfuelling and need attention. The filter and exhuast will make little difference to fuel consuption over the standard items.
Get the charger serviced, it's not worth the risk.
The brakes might some attention, you can't get a bigger servo in unless you make it remote.

Hi, firstly welcome, second congrats on getting a G40
How many mpg are you getting from it? The poor economy is highly unlikely to be air filter or exhaust related - in fact having a low restriction air filter technically should make it more fuel efficient, providing you don't get a heavier right foot as a result of fitting it, which tends to be the case
I'm sure some of the mk3 guys can go through the common causes of poor economy with you.. as far as I can see it tends to either be the blue temperature sensor failing or a faulty lamba sensor, which can lead to the car overfuelling heavily.
As for the charger, I can't exactly pretend to have any experience with them, but I'd guess that it's probably about time for a service after 70,000 miles. Perhaps best just to take it easy until you can afford to get it done.
Now, as for the brakes.. G40 brakes are what the rest of us aim to upgrade to, so think what we have to put up with
You won't fit a bigger servo in there unfortunately.. the mk3 bulkhead had to be redesigned from the mk2 to fit any servo at all, and unfortunately the servo that was fitted was just enough to help old ladies park outside the shops but not much more.. all you can do about the brakes really is to either fit a remote servo (which will either be very pricey or not much improvement over the original one), or fit bigger discs and higher quality pads. I have a feeling you can also fit a larger master cylinder, off a golf gti or something, but I don't really know anything about doing that.

brakes - change the fluid, check the discs & pads for wear & replace if needed. Use VAG discs & just about the best pads are some Raicam ones from Pitstop Developments.
Check out the flexi hoses as well, if the rubber looks like it's gone brittle or there's any bubbles in it then replace them with braided items (worth doing anyway even if the rubber hoses are OK-ish), you can also get these from Pitstop.
what MPG are you getting exactly? if you've come from driving a 1.3 polo or something then it will seem like it's drinking fuel for fun, especially if you've got a heavy right foot (as most G40 owners tend to!).

Thanks for the advice guys, i already have braided brake lines all round and new disks and pads, maybe i should try bleeding them and starting again. also, how hard is it to change the pulley belts to the charger as the previous owner replaced one but not the other so it looks in a bad way!!
are there any meeting in the south-east of england at all as i would really like to meet some more polo owners,
i used to have a golf mk2 driver 1.6 that was so so slow, cant get used to this power yet, im only 19 too!!!

On my pretty standard G40. On my other car (CTR) I got 160 miles to a 55 litre tank once!

You've just missed one by a couple of weeksjoeg40 wrote: are there any meeting in the south-east of england at all as i would really like to meet some more polo owners
Sounds like you're getting about the same economy as I am, which is about 30-35mpg.. rubbish for my 1.05, but would have thought it's about right for a G40 really.. try going on an economy run and see what it gives you, should think it'd be about the same as a mk3 gt if you don't open the throttle wide enough that the charger comes into play.. although someone correct me if I'm wrong there.
