could always try for seeing if its got a rev limiter........ put it in 1st, find a deserted stretch of road, floor it til the revs go no higher and see where that point is... if you reach 35 ease off cuz it therefore hasnt got one!
(should be ~6300rpm?)
All MK2 owners.....

Tahrey the rev limiter in the mk2's is built into the rotor arm so all you need do is pull of the dizzy capTahrey1043 wrote:could always try for seeing if its got a rev limiter........ put it in 1st, find a deserted stretch of road, floor it til the revs go no higher and see where that point is... if you reach 35 ease off cuz it therefore hasnt got one!

..if it has one, which most don't
Tahrey, would have thought the limiter would be more like 7,000 rpm.. mk2 red line isn't until 6,700rpm, 'yellow' line (or broken red..) at 6,300... certainly mine either has no limiter or is limited the wrong side of 7,000 (I think it just doesn't have one though, never looked to see)

Just going by my manual on this one --- it appears to have several bits hung over from the mk2 documentation, including the continuing listing of carburettor engines (for "special markets" ... ?!), and a short passage saying that the maximum continual engine speed for all petrol models is 6300rpm - seeing as the limiter is at 6500 on CLs, 6600 on Gs and 6800 on G40s, which are all only small fractions over that speed, i can only assume they mean old carb units with slightly lower rev tolerance for whatever reason - that way they can tell punters the limit of the lowest revving engines of the range and cover their backsides for all types!
of course, if you don't have a limiter, or it's quite a lass... lazza... lassaiz.... oh, sod it... quite an easy-going one (7000...), that's their way of telling you that it'll rev as high as you want it to, but anything over 6300 is on your own head.
(quite how anyone driving a non-tacho'd model was supposed to know where that was is beyond me)
and before anyone gets smart, it's one of 4500 / 4750 / 4800 / 5000 on the diesel, supposedly electronically limitered (fuel pump?). i'd throw my chips in with 4750

Just remembered that my tacho is actually for a mk1 golf gti.. but I think the red line's the same on the coupe s tacho I have in the loft. I think the point is that you really shouldn't be cruising above 6,300rpm (who in their right mind would want to?), but I'm sure the actual limiter would have been a good way above that.
Anyone actually have a limiter to shed some light on the matter?

someone with a 1.3 4-speed, or an unusually good 1.0, on a shallow but long descent from some high altitude bit of europe to the coast?
do regret never having had chance to take polo to france - could have finally hemmed it up against the limiter (or a bit beyond, triggering all kinds of ECU limp-mode alarms
) whooping up and down through brittany on their mental rolling, engine-destroying autoroute hills.... 40mph in 2nd up one side, 120 ... in neutral ... down the other
