My car key is corroding!!!

My car when i bought it came wid one key. it is the spare key without the light. previous owner dropped other in the gutter. now i only have one and it is starting to flake off little chunks of it. It wierd never seen a key do that. My worry is it may stop working alltogether. I want to get another one, and vw want Â£100 quid as it also needs to be coded to immobilser or something. i went to a key cut guy and he said he can do it 4 Â£20. but i dont know if a normal laser cut key will work straight off as some1 told me it wont start wid it. is this true?? is there any place mailorder or in london that can provide one or is is to vw stealerships??

I was gettin a key cut for my da one day n when the guy in the shop seen my key (98 6n) he told me that id'd cost bout 50euro to copy, this was a normal key cutter shop so it can be done outside vw....

He also said that that price included havin it coded to immobilser.

It says they can do transponder keys i think this is to code to immobiliser no?

But when the code it to immobiliser, do they need that grey metal plate thing on your key fob which has codes that came with ure car when new, or can it be cut and coded upon my existing key. As that metal plate thing i didnt get but i have owned a vw b4 and i think they all come with one dont they??

does any1 know if a vw dealer would be able to provide me this plate with codes or atleast the code written down on paper.

cheers i go to any vw dealership or does it have to be where it was bought from. Its kinda miles away thats why!
