Just a little problem I'm struggling with

Post by bstardchild »

OK - sometimes I get stuck with a problem and I am stuck here.....

Polo 1.4 8V CL

When I bought the car it was sooo quiet compared to the previous MKII Coupe S (I think anything would have been!) however as I have got used to it there is a noise I'd like to get rid off

Basically It thrums from anything above 30 mph - sort of in time with the wheels rotating but it feels like a bush is gone somewhere and instead of getting a rubber damped ride it's a metal on metal resonance

- It got a lot louder when I went from 13' 175's to 15' 195's and has reduced a bit since I went back to 14' and 185's for the winter but it's still there.

- It was reduced further when I replaced the wheel bearings at the rear of the car but it's still there and road surfaces play a big factor on it's level.

ie on smooth well surfaced roads you can hardly notice it on bitumin spray gravel road it's bloody awful......

- I've checked the fronts wheel for play and they are exactly what I would expect to see

Before I rip the front hubs off and replace the front wheel bearings (my only guess at this stage) does anyone else have any experience of similar issue and resolution?

Maybe engine mounts or suspension bushes?

No help whatsoever but i have the same thing coming from the front of my car, i thought it was the rear wheel bearings at first but its still there after two new ones. On smooth roads its hardly noticable..if at all, then.. as you say on the rough looking roads its there again...i thought mine was a wheel bearing but everything seems fine up front.
Funny thing is..when i turn the stereo up it seems to disapeer

its not just road/tyre noise and you've got too sensitive to it, is it? :D
