Pedal Box Weld Failure

Post by mr_jolly »

1999 1.4 CL. Clutch hit the floor yesterday as I was driving along the motorway. Took it to a local garage who says the welding on the pedal box has failed. He has seen this before on another Polo (non-GTI) and immediately suggested I contact VW because of the GTI recall and that they might contribute towards a repair. VW Customer Services have dismissed it out of hand (because I don't have a full VW Sevice History!).

Two questions really:- roughly how much should the repair cost and is there any joy in pursuing a contribution from VW?

As it is a widely known issue (not just on the GTI), isn't there a good case to be made for it being a design/manufacture fault and not poor driving or servicing - yes I know, sounds good in theory!!!

Also I had noticed it was very hard to get the car into reverse without the gears grinding. Is this related to the pedal box going and should I get the garage to do any extra work to fix this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

well labour is the cost of fixing the job really...i had the same problem on my old 1.6L polo mk4.
The weld failed and the clutch pedal just dropped onto the floor and stayed there.
I just can't think exactly where it failed, but it was definately a problem the garage had before apparently on the mk4's (they're a vw/audi specialist)

I remember they had to remove nearly all of the drivers side dash/steering column to access the weld on the pedal box...and re-weld it.

I would definately get them to look at the gear change too...i think its either your actual shifter mechanism, or the gear linkage on the gearbox...could also be the clutch cable that needs to be adjusted.

get them to do a gearbox oil change too if they can. Sanjay.

When I was at awesome gti last time an Audi TT came in on the back of a lorry, the clutch pedal had fallen to the floor! Apparently this is a common fault in all VAG cars but they can’t be arsed changing it!

[rant]The welds are probably done by a 16 year old Muppet who’s done a six-week welding course and thinks he's the dog’s boloks![/rant]

sorry
