Yup, 'tis all true.
Don't put any more in or it goes all over your feet and the manager of the filling station asks some serious questions That's how I found out the capacity of the tank before getting my Haynes
Why not just record the mileage between two top to top fills and how much you put in at the end of that mileage.. that way you don't need to drain the dregs out of the bottom of your tank, and you'll get a reasonably accurate measurement of volume of fuel if you just go top to top and read off the pump..

last time I filled up it was nearly a full tank soooo. If I run it to the same stage or there abouts again. That'll give me a fair estimate.
Hopefully I'll get more than 320miles out of this tank Otherwise that's less than 34mpg, on a fairly open route/high speed route, not just stuck in traffic.
its officially 42 litres, but unless the petrol stations are fiddling the figures you can squeeze a litre or two more in there - if it's been run bone dry.
best to just fill it to the first click-off and measure how much you put in on each fill and how far you went. the cut off will vary slightly between stations, but not enough to cause significant error out of say 30 litres. (probably enough to cause big error if you only go far enough to use the minimum 2 litres though!)
think I am getting in the region of 350 miles out of a tank ...country and town driving not motorway where it may but I would never rely on it being a little more than that ...my polo is an early mk 111 h reg facelift model with nearly 72,000 miles on the clock
