whining clutch?

Post by mikegti »

I was driving around without the radio on today and heard an odd noise...

when I press the clutch whilst moving I can hear a faint whine from the front of the car. It doesn't seem to make the noise when I'm stationary with the clutch down (or at least i cant hear it).

Didn't have much time to investigate today, just wondered if this sounds familiar to anyone??

clutch release bearings?

Mine's doing the same.. general thought is the release bearing, yeah. I'm going to have the clutch done next month as I think the plate's on the way out too.. suprised yours is wearing out on such a new car though :?

Usually is the release bearing if the noise goes when you put the clutch pedal down.
You have to remove the gearbox to get to them , so usually a good idea to replace clutch kit when replacing owt.
Clutch plate pressure plate and release bearing.
That way you dont have to pay for the job to be done twice.

It's done about 63,000 miles, its one of the early W reg's. I wonder if I can get the service history from a VW dealer as it was serviced by them until i bought it.
I've not noticed a problem with the clutch itself, just the noise.

ok, might be something else then... I'll see if it gets any worse!

what would a faint knocking noise (and slightly reduced engine speed) with the clutch pedal UP (but not down) mean?
