mk3 Saloon Questions.

Post by genesisGT »

Hi just wondering about the following as a dont know as much about the saloons as the rest of the mk3 range -

I have just read that all mk3 saloons came in CL guise is this right?

Also did they ALL come with rear headrests built into the rear seat cushion or was it an optional extra?

Are the rear seats fitted the same as the rest of the mk3 range ie just unscrew. So say A GT interior could be fitted?

Engine wise were they all NZ 1.3 engines or did they do them in 1.0 AAU and AAV 1.3?

Stereo wise are there any rear speakers/speaker holes or is it just the two in the dash?

Anyone know?

thanks! :D

1.0 AAU and 1.3 AAV engines were used. Although it wouldn't supprise me if an NZ slipped in there somewhere

Both had rear hedrests as it's part of the seats.

The 1.3 had internal couresty light and adjustable door mirros where as the 1.0 didn't they did have a GT-Style black trim over the arches and around the doors

The rear seats AFAIK the bottom half is the same but the rear bench hooks onto a panel running along the boot, so the backs are different, even if you managed to fit a GT bench there is a 2 inch gap as the saloon benches were higher (i've tried it!)

Just 2 speakers in the dash

There were 3 different types of cloth for the seats, and even a 4th sports cloth but never seen that.

Although on the plus side, the headlining and rear door cards appear to be the same as the coupe which is a bit wierd, not 100% sure on this yet though. I did take some photos somewhere, I'll be back...

The 1ltr had the interior light too as mine has...but no adjustable mirrors and there is speakers holes in the rear but the crad board needs trimming to fit speakers..theyre built into the metal frame behind the seats (sorta parcel shelf)

From experience of driving a few polo's though i have noticed the saloons handle a bit better on bends, I think it may be due to the boot evening out the wieght better.

Although can't say for sure...but a mate did ask me how i could get round a roundabout so quick as his audi quattro was on the limit *mine was too but don't tell him lol*

I thought all the saloon 1.3s were NZ? as it was only available at H/very early J plate unless it was a late car with a AAV but not sure. :?

didnt know about the rear seat vertical section!

I believe the glass except the back window is the same as a coupe so you can fit the green tinted glass out some coupes.

Last year there was a saloon in the local scrapyard and it had door speakers in leather surrounds built into the doors - it looked very profesional! and had the two in the dash so a presumed all saloons had them, but i thought sound distribution would be very poor. I went back the next day for the doorcards and speakers but the car was crushed! if only i knew it was a mod back then !

On the parcel shelf/flat area behind seats could speakers be fitted or is there a metal plate below perventing it?

didnt know about the headliner being possibly the same as a coupe - would be good to know i will check etka!

Reason for all the questions is I am thinking of making a GT saloon with all the proper GT parts as it would be slightly different. i know others are about (Mr Metz 8) etc) but fancy making my own version. :D

 I'm already planning on copying Metz :P

So we would have 3 (unique!) Polo Saloon GT's.

Do you have a saloon already?isn't Metz selling his?

Hi metz ,

Did the AAU in the saloon feel slower than the coupe/hatch? As the saloon would have to keep the standard engine for a good while till a got the rest sorted.

Interesting about the handling presume the boot keeps it on the deck!

whats your lowered by as it looks very smart!

There a smart red one on ebay that keeps popping up, but I think the reserve is probably a bit high.

I have the green tints on my car..so the glass does fit yes..

The speaker holes are already cut out in the metal (5 x8" i think)but there cardboard and carpet covering them on the inside of the car so u just have to trim that (i havent yet)

I havent driven a 1ltr coupe so couldnt comment if the saloon was any slower but it felt quite nippy to be honest..far from a g40 or gt to that matter but still shocked the corsa boys round here.

Mines got -40mm lowering springs on but the rear is lower than the front so will go -60mm up front to flatten it out.

You will be suprised how well they stick to the road, I bet the jetta out performs the golf in the same way.

an exapmle i was coming home from madmatts the other day and took the roundabout where the a57 meets the m1 at 75mph *or could that be 60mph mr policeman* and i could just about feel the wheels scrabbling for grip on my exit.

most of the 1.3 mk3 saloons have NZ engines, which is what mine has.

petrified snap - the one Im looking at is tornado red and looks as good as yours!

The wee old man has owned it from new and its lucky if it has done 35,000, dont think it has ever seen a motorway let alone been on one! the paint is mint as is the black trim and interior and wheel trims - I was well impressed! Most saloons seem to be well cared for!

Its not for sale but! I feel like making him an offer anyway! :D

Thanks hayesey! I thought it was the only 1.3 available at H plate. but may be wrong!

If you lift you boot carpet up you can see where they've more or less literally just welded a boot onto a coupe. Looks quite funny really, its the same on my booted thing.
