crank oil seal....easy job??

my 1300 polo is still leaking oil , so i figured id change the sump gasket and front crank oil seal cus they both look suspect

is there any special tools i need for the oil seal...difficult or hard to do??

and i take it the sump gasket is a easy job?? im away from my manual right now

one last thing...assuming ive done crank seal,sump,and head gasket ...thats it for that area right?? its getting wet around the alt bracket and arb mount and i cant suss where its leaking...and the bits are cheep , but i wana make sure i get it this time

Can't comment on the crank seal as I've never done it (really should have done when I had the engine out, but I guess that's just something to remember for the future..). The sump gasket is a piece of cake, but you will need a 1/4" socket set with a 10mm socket and a long extension bar to get at the two bolts at the gearbox end of the sump, they're very fiddly to get at as that end of the sump sticks slightly into the gearbox bell housing so it's an awkward angle. Other than that it's just a case of draining the oil, removing a few hundred irritating little bolts and then putting it back together with a new gasket sandwiched in place.

One other place to look, camshaft oil seal, perhaps? I'd like to say something more definate, but I'm constantly trying to track down random oil leaks in mine, however many gaskets I change.. I'll get it right one day..

bump

just had a look at the leak...seems to be coming from the oil pump? if im right in thinking its like a plate that bolts to the end of the engine?

so anyone had one apart with the engine in the car??

Couldn't even get mine out with the engine out of the car.. wouldn't like to try it with everything still in place :?

any reason why you couldnt do it?? was it no possible or you didnt have the tools needed??

im pretty sure its coming from around that flange,,, unless i try nipping the bolts and a thick coat of hammerite :oops:

Basically because the allen nuts holding it in are so incredibly tight that I stripped all the heads trying to get them undone. I'm sure they can be undone (I'd recommend getting some allen sockets rather than trying to use those useless keys like I did at the time), but you don't have much room for leverage when you're lying under the car and trying to get at the very end of the engine where it's right up against the inner wing anyway..

mine looks like its got 10mm bolts??? so asumming i can undo the fasteners and get the sump off, it should be okay to do??

Oh probably, yeah, but I can't say I've tried with it in situ (or actually managed it either way) so I'm afraid I can't really advise ;)
