I don't think the wiring loom would be present in the dash, so it cannot be connected

Do you not also need air con?

Yes, its not that easy. The full climate control has all sorts of crap like humidity sensors, sun index sensors, and different vents and flaps for recirculating. Which is why its climate and not air con. Also, the flaps on normal air con appart from re-circ are controlled by good old fashioned cables, where as on the GTi with climate they are servo. So even with all the other stuff it aint that easy.

Semi automatic is much more plausible, whereby you set a temp and it uses what ever it has to get that temp. But to add this to normal A/C is probably a bespoke system. On top of which the normal AC has a problem of yoyoing humidity which you would somehow have to address. If you turn on AC when its damp the evap gets wet, which dries the air, then turing it off again results in very damp air misting up the cold windscreen. So you might find that making it work automatically would still require constant fiddling.

Perhaps best left.

shame
seems not worth all the hassle, time, money and effort to set-up.
