This is usually the engine management system stating there is a fault somewhere - i took mine into VW wen this happened charge £50 for error reading and if u have the work done there and then they 'do not charge for error reading'

get yourself vag com so you can view and erase the codes yourself. You can also watch whats happening, ignition timing, intake temps, rpm, engine temps etc etc etc. very handy bit of kit.
I had the same problem about 10 months ago. I took it to my local VW dealer and they charged me £42 for changing a switch that had gone faulty. I think it was the brake pedal switch!
