You could swap out the 1.0-litre lump for a GTi engine, but although the power gains would be satisfying in the short-term, its not a massively tuneable engine, being naturally aspirated, and you may have trouble sourcing a good one.

As for the 1.8T unit, this is much more commonplace across the VAG range and can easily be tuned for high-power applications. At the end of the day you'd be looking at maybe £6k-8k for the engine and all the parts and labour needed, maybe a little more! You'd still have a FWD Polo at the end of it all though with a lot of power trying to get through the front wheels, so maybe 220bhp tops?

220bhp tops?

Hehe

James from JBS runs upwards of 450bhp through his front wheels!!

4.8 to 60 in a front wheel drive car is pretty good

Crikey! I was of the opinion from what I've read that anything over about 250bhp gives you major headaches with the handling and the power delivery through just the front wheels - looks like I was wrong

Having just swapped a 1.0 Mk5 for a GTi, I can safely say its one of the best decisions I've made in a long time.

The feeling from sitting in pretty much the same car as I had before, but going 2.5 times as fast is very cool :D

remember if your goin down the engine conversion route then you'll need to uprate brakes and supension to cope with the increased speed etc!

my bro phoned a company about engine converstions some time ago. he mentioned the 20v tubro or vr6 but aparently these would be quite difficult to carry out. they mentioned a g40 lump would fit in no problem!

Si right about having the 1.6 16v DOHC lump, there is little you can do to in terms of tuning...if I had the money I would go for the 1.8T, possible the S3 225bhp unit...now that would be sweet...I know JBS are currently fitting a 1.8T lump in a MkIV Polo, it's already had the arches rolled and some Audi door handles fitted...and of...yse, not forgetting what looked like air-ride! Be expecting to see that Polo at a show near you soon!

I've seen on Polo G60 in either PVW or The Golf magazine recently and I know JBS had one what seemed to be a long time ago...

right checked with my bro, he phoned awsome GTI. aparently the g40 lump is ment to be quite a straight swop! the vr6 lump and the 20vt lump are an expensive job, plus u need the speedos n stuff aparently!

didn't give him a price on the g40 lump conversion, but if it isn't a hard job, it wouldn't be do much i my opinion!

regards
Doug
