just get a really good grip and turn it anti clockwise
it might help if you park the car in the sun to get everything hot and a little looser

Or, instead of breaking it, you could pry a small screwdriver in it, to loosen its grip on the shaft. Just move the screwedriver a bit and it'll come loose. Worked for me!

Good luck!

Yeah it's the same as the Mk5 and the Golf Mk4.

I can see the reason for your assumption, the car shares so much with the Mk3 Golf (in which it's screwed on) that this is an odd exception.

If you get a OE gearknob it'll include a clip, and they're also available seperately at the dealer for next to nothing.

Is a jubilee clip one of those garden hose clamp thingies?

Sorry about that Vicki, this gearknob (out of a Golf Mk4) is an example of an OE gearknob. I bought it from the dealership four roughly 50€, and it's available from [email protected] (see his section at the bottom of the forum list) too.

The 1J0 711 113A E74 is £29.57+vat from Vagparts. That number is the part number you give the parts guy to order it for you, or to Martyn of course.

You can also have a look in the DIY section on the gearknob fitting issues.

Good luck!

Main dealer shocker

Post by Pontyslapper »

Went to Hartwell/Cardiff Volkswagen main dealer and paid just £22.50 for my new gearstick knob. Was surprised to find out that you don't just get the knob, but also the leatherette 'skirt' and the little brass/metal collar which you have to squeeze together to make it hold fast.
