MK4 Speedo's

Post by andythebubble »

Does anyone know about the 2 types of speedo that you can get on mk4 polo's. I have seen a later type on the 98 polo's. This one is very similar to the mk4 golf style. I have also noticed late Ibiza mk2 also have this change. Do you know if the have the same connectors on the back?

Good eye. The speedo was one of the things that changed on 1998 models (and onwards). They aren't compatible unfortunately, so fitting a new speedo to an older car is hard, AFAIK. Don't know if the connectors are identical but I'm sure there are some gurus here that know.

Well, today I started the modification process. It looks like the newer speedo has 2 sockets; one for all the motors and displays, and the other is for the trip display.

I’m going to try and make an adapter, for the socket, using extra parts. The bracket inside the dash also has to be adjusted to allow the new speedo to fit in.

This is a big project but will be worth it hopefully.
