Lowering springs

Post by Revis »

Basically i have in my posession some 40mm springs and some other springs and shocks bought here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %3AIT&rd=1

But as u can see they wrote:
LOWERS CARS APPROXIMATELY 40mm (vehicles 1981-1990)
LOWERS CARS APPROXIMATELY 60mm (vehicles 07/1990-10/1994)
Which i didn't quite understand as they all have the same suspension dont they? but if it ended up being 60mm i didn't really mind, as i need to find some new wheels anyway. Here is a picture of the springs:

what is puzzling to me is why the 40mm ones (red) are smaller than the 40/60mm ones (blue). Anyone care to enlighten me. Also will the blue ones be 60mm or 40mm, cos my logic was the lower they go the shorter the springs would be?

right apparently standard front springs are 14" long. So i measured the blue and red front ones and they were just under 11.5". That makes them -60mm from standard. But the red ones are supposed to be -40mm lowering. Ive also measured the rears (from the picture) and the red ones are 13.25"and the blue ones are 14". Whats going on, im baffled.

maybe the spring rate of the blue ones is lower so they will compress more. But I cant see this being the case as for a 60mm drop you should need a higher spring rate. Basically I dont know. :P As for what was quoted on the ebay article, Id be very suprised if they lowered a mk2 by 40mm and a mk3 by 60mm! As you rightly say the suspension is virtually the same. If I had to guess they might be a bit like my eibach springs, the length of those was virtually the same as the standard rears, and I havent checked the fronts yet.

cheers Gaz. I think im going to sell the red ones and put the blue ones on with the kit i bought off ebay. I reckon they're going to be 40mm drop slightly softer than the red ones ive got. Which insidently were Venom ones. Hmm aren't Venom ones just G-Max ones? And im sure ive heard they are a bit soft from what hayesey was saying. Hmm might have to go with the red ones then. I dont bloody know :? :P

You never get a set of spring that lower exactly what they say. They all differ in some way or another and the shocks you use make a big difference too.
