Dodgy note from cash machine.

Post by GaryUK »

Hello, I'm after abit of advice,

Went out last night and took out £40.00 (2x10 + 1x20) from a cash machine at a local petrol station as it was a mates birthday and was going out to the local pubs and clubs. I got down to the £20.00 note and tried to pay for a round and it turns out it's a fake! The barman held it up to the light and didn't light up like a proper one he showed me.

Has anyone had this happen before? It cleaned me out and I didnt have enough for a taxi but luckily blagged a lift off another mate. It's pretty bad coz it made me look well dodgy. I'm going in to my bank on Monday to sort the whole thing out or should I be going to the police? I got a receipt when i withdrew the cash.

Any thoughts?

Wow. Can't say I've ever had a counterfeit note from an ATM before!

Hmmm. Go to the bank, explain the situation, and they should hopefully sort the whole thing out for you I'd like to think. I'd go to the bank first anyway. They should have checked all the notes that go into the ATM in the first place, its not something you'd expect to get a counterfeit note from!! Thats a bit s**t really!

Whatever the outcome, let us know how you get on - and lets hope they'll sort it out for you! :)

I wouldnt take it back to the bank because they won't refund it.

My dad used to collect insurance premiums as his job, and whenever he had any fakes (the cashiers pick up on fakes easily when they count the money) they just take them... they don't give new ones.

Because this used to put him out of pocket I'd go any spend any fake notes he had.

I suggest you go and fill up with £20 of petrol and pay with the fake note. Taking it to the bank willleave you minus 20 quid.

yeah, and you know that theyll just recycle it back into the ATMs anyway

unfortunately all you can do is either burn it (make a big fat rollie and pretend you're a gangsta?), or find someone else to fob it off on who wont notice and hopefully wont get trouble for it

Probably worth getting in touch with the law and the bank to tell them that it's going on and where you got it from - could be that one of their employees is scamming them for a few twenties out of each ATM bundle that they have the responsibiltiy for checking......

Well i work for a building society and Securitas who deliver the money often have fakes in the bundles and bundles are often 20-40 short.

its not the bank or the petrol station at fault it is the security centre where the money is sorted.

Ask the petrol station what centre they use (ie securicor) and contact them but i dont hold out much hope if u havent got the note.

I took out £100 from my account paid it into another account via the autotellr machine, it kept rejecting one of the notes, it did look weird, accepted it in the end, but that was on Sat, so I'll see if anything comes back from it.

Get in touch with that pub ASAP - they might have "forwarded" the note by now...

A dipsy friend of mine was getting some money from an ATM, took her card out and then walked off - forgot to take the money!! :o

She told the bank the next day (brave of her!!) and they gave her the money there and then!!

Worth speaking to the bank anyway. As long as you don't go back in every week and try the same thing!!

Hmmm, never did get my £20.00 back. Barclays weren't interested because it wasn't there machine and I didn't have the note so there wasn't much anyone could do. Bad luck I suppose!

On a plus I won a tenner on the lottery last week so half way there!

I'm gonna try and only use the banks atm and not the dodgy one at the petrol station in future. Oh and I'm gonna carry a rabbits foot with me at all times to stop bad luck.

i used one of my credit cards at a petrol station in salford last august

never used it online

and its since got online frauded to around £800

i've not had to pay for any of it, infact, i ended up making £1.26 because of some random repayments on things i did spend and interest malarchy.

i only go to certain "trusted" petrol stations now lol

number 1 rule - never let the card out of your sight. then at least you can tell everywhere its been and where it might have been cloned.

(which i guess also means dont use your card at the bar, as i've never been to - or worked at one - where the user's card didnt have to be taken to some remote till or machine to be swiped, and then kept hidden until after the signature's been checked)

number 2...................... um :)
