Lowering the car only ruins the feel of it if ur stingy with your Â£Â£Â£ when doing so... you get what you pay for, so if you buy quality springs then you get a quality ride. My car no longer beleives in sway in any form. And the ride has improved from standard so i can only say its been definatly worth it.

My car drives better in the wet now then it did standard in the dry... my only complaint about lowering is that i should have done it sooner!! Collies would be nice but seeing as 30mm is my limit as far as clearance goes ill have to be happy with what i got!

I think even if i didnt have wheels on my car id uprate the springs, the VW ones are dire and have more sway then a double decker bus.

-Yeah, done lots of lowering, and I am quite good with the geometry and working out how much damping is required. Done some formula SAE, but we found throwing out the math and driving it and eventually you get a feel for what adjustments to make. You don't get anything like that much adjustment capability though coilies help a lot.

But what I am saying is that its just about right the way it is right now, just a pity its so high. I should have one of those private jet staircases.... That would be cool...

I fail to see how lowering the car using proper methods can be anything but beneficial to both the car in driving and the driver itself. Look at most track or tuned cars, all use lower and stiffer suspension. Don't even get me started on the looks.

If you are gonna drop a car and want to retain a semblance of ride quality get progressive springs rather than fixed rate.....

This is where the price comes into it - cheap lowering springs aren't progressive

Easy to tell the difference

Fixed rate = Equal spaced coils on an unloaded spring

Progressive = Some coils closer together and others far apart

My polo is dropped by 50mm and ride quality on A roads is better than std - chuck it into a bend and yes you still get a bit of body roll as the close spring coils bind up but then it's stiff as a stiff thing and can be hurled through.....

Gotta remember if you lack BHP getting thro the corners at a higher speed is a good substitute

Debate Eh ?

Popped into VW yesterday for a trusty cluth cable

Had a look at the RS4 wheels on display - 2 sets both being 18" with tyres Â£700 (isnt that a bit cheap?) - Im not sure if you can get them without there tyres. 18" is a bit too far - some of you lot think 17" is too far.

Dude said they dunno if they will get the 17" as they need to sell a set of the 18" to get a new set in, he doesnt know if it will be 17" that will come in"

I have 15" wheels on the standard stuff. Since i changed the alloys ive hated the whole 4-5" gap between the wheel and the arch. I cant lower it and bring it in my drive (Ramps pritty steep) So the only option(s) was lower it and park in the street (And we know how people (Neds etc) react to moddied cars - stuff goes missing) or sort out the drive - and i dont fancy that !!!!

A mate had 17" wheels on his and i pretty much liked it - i shoulda drove it before he sold it too see the handling !!!!

After seeing the wheels though i really do like them - just a case of getting them in the 17" size....

sorry to put you off but 18s wont fit a mk5 without major arch modifications.
plus, 18s will be too wide?

(neds = chavs, btw for all the ppl south of the border

theres 17s from rochford tyres and ebay for around Â£250 without tyres. (replicas btw) which is fair money IMO, and looks the biz

Aaron, how much did you pay for arch work? Mine only rubs slighly in reverse on full lock but i would'nt mind sorting it out once and for all...

i didnt need arch work (mines a mk6 btw) and it supports 18x8" without rubbing

i know this is the case for the mk5s cus my mate had 18s on his, 7.5" width major arch mods, but stil rubbed occasionally. he took them off after a few months and went back to 17s.
