yes the 205/40/17 will go on a 6n2, but they will rub.
our member 'polosilver' has just put on his 17" with 205/40/17 recently, and i believe he had minor archwork and is ok now. (lowered 30mm as well)

coilovers, the 17s will cause you big problems when lowering, so i would advise you to stick with 15/16s if u want to deck the thing, 8) or go for 17s with a small drop. say 30mm?

Beleive it or not it actually rubbed less when i had it lowered! How odd, maybe the arch is at its widest point when the wheel higher into the arch. Im not sure how but mine hardly ever rubs now??

My mate has the same setup on his car and his rubs like f**k, down the side of the tyre wall. His is a 2000 6N2. Maybe my 2001 6N2 has slightly larger arches then his? Did the 2000 one keep the 6n arches and 2001 get new ones?

No idea! But you should be alright with 17 x 7.5.

You can have wheels rolled for £25 each so not expensive! I think the 2000 6n2 has the 6n arches!

P.S.

Incase your interested Aaron, the suspension did settle down. I now have a 1cm gap between the arch and wheel. Took about 120 miles ish!

Yeah, defo the full 30mm, if not a tad more. I could get 5 fingers in the arch before, now i can only get 1! The front is slightly higher then the back, which is fine as it allows hard turning. Really pleased with it now, so many people keep pming me about the wheels. Damn it i wanna be a one off!

also late 6n's (v onwards) had very similar slightly rolled arches to a mk5 6n2.
as for 17's and coil-overs, forget about it! unless you can afford or wanna risk serious arch-work, im reckoning with 17's looking at phil's car your looking at a -40mm drop max.

stud pattern is not right for the mk5, as this set is a 5 stud. it is possible to get spacers/adapters to fit though
