Right i've ordered a lowering kit from gsf car parts for my polo.I want to put some more retro looking wheels on the car.I was thinking of these http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/images/bb_rs_copys.jpg .The smallest they do is 15 inch with 7 inch width. Will these wheels fit?

dont think a 4 speed should be too "unlucky" on a 1986 car mate
looks quite fly for an almost stock, 19 year old vehicle. maybe its just the aerial, wheels and sunroof doing it to me
the wheels might be a hell of a push particularly with lowering. you're likely looking at having to roll your arches. note that the standard wheels on these cars were 13 x 4.5, or 13 x 5.5 ... the latter ones not leaving a hell of a lot of space as it is, particularly at the back.

Means you have to alter the body panels to make the wheels fit, mate! The car was never designed for such (comparitively) enormous rims. Fitting them isn't out of the realm of possibility, but if you browse over some other posts round here you'll see someone with 14 x 6s getting similar advice from another member, so be prepared for a little bit of work. You can probably do it but it's not a straight bolt-on.
Doing the arches is allegedly quite a simple operation, and something you can even do at home with a special tool if you have a coupe. However, a square-back like yours i think needs more detailed attention from an expert as it won't be simply a matter of clipping a device on and rolling it round a simple circular shape - those rear wheel wells are quite an odd shape when you take the time to look at them.
If you're brand spanking new to the modding thing might be best to hang round a while, read back thru the archives (use search function), etc to get a better handle on what you're about to do before diving right in. A thousand horrific novas have been created that way - though it sounds like your result would be far better looking
(Those wheels are right classic after all)
(but theres enough BBS's around in slightly smaller styles that would look a lot like that, and even if they're not quite right, you could probably polish 'em up to match)
I've seen a body kit for the mk2, (either of rally or touring car origin - not sure) but i think it's quite rare and expensive, and likely only fits the coupe. Plus in my own opinion its bloody ugly, though it has quite a few fans.

Nice car
4 speed gearbox isn't unlucky, 5 speed is just extremely lucky! Not hard to change them though, and there are plenty of 5 speeds flying around out of later polos and mk2 golfs should you want to.
You'd be extremely lucky to get those wheels to fit I'm afraid. 15" is a touch big for the old polos, and 7" is also quite a bit too wide. To give you an idea, my alloys are 13" / 5.5" wide, the biggest I'd recommend you go is about 14"/6", and even so you may need to get your rear arches rolled, especially if you're having it lowered. The problem with squarebacks is that the rear arches are particularly restrictive, instead of flaring out like most arches they simply cut straight across the top of the wheel's travel.
What I would recommend you do is get hold of a set of either 13" or 14" BBS RA's, as fitted to the polo G40 in 13" and the mk2 golf in 14". There are usually a few sets hanging around somewhere, and they tend to go for in the region of £100 for a decent set. Anything over 14" is going to be hard to fit and probably won't really suit the car anyway, they start to look out of place if you go too big.
Body kits - not much choice really. For starters you could find yourself a Coupe S and take the arch/sill/valence trim from it, this gives you slightly flared wheelarches and a more agressive look with the black sill and valance trims. Also, you could find an RS bumper kit, they look like mk2 golf big bumpers - http://img18.echo.cx/img18/2402/front9vi.jpg is one that was for sale on porka.net a few months back. That's about your lot really, without spending silly money on a custom fibreglass job.. remember you can also do as a few people have done and modify mk3 polo bumpers or mk2 golf big bumpers to fit - polokris on these forums has fitted the mk3 bumpers to his squareback, you may want to talk to him about that.

Car looks as if its in good nick for its age, G.C.s more or less outlined about all you can really do as far as body kits are concerned. Have a look on the r and a website- it sells debadged grills, eyebrow spoilers and bumpers.
Personally if youve got money to spend and you want to go for a euro style id go down the big bumper road and flush the body work
[porka.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9979],
but if your going for the retro look [dont do body kits] you can get quite a cheap good transformation by doing things like;
Debadging the grill
Clear front and side repeaters
de 'bump stripping' the car
lowering it [no more than 40mm on a square back!!]
Debadging the rest of the car
German plates
Original vw alloys from various models [eg P slots ]
And if your going really retro -chromed out roof rack
Good luck!

I think i want to go for a retro look.Heres my plan:-
Lower the car no more than 40mm.
Debadge the car.
When you say clear front and side repeaters,do you mean take them off? or put see through plastic repeaters on there instead of orange?
What do you mean by bump stripping?
German plates, how would one go about doing that in this country?
Also does anybody know of any bbs ra 13inch for sale?or know the best place to look?
Sorry i did say i am new to this.

Clear indicators: you can buy clear or smoked lenses for the indicators. Far right picture in my signiture shows the smoked front indicators, quite an improvement on the standard orange jobs.
The bump strips are the rubber strips that run along the side of the car, about half way up the doors. They're there to stop people denting your car by opening their doors onto it in a car park. Remove them if you want a cleaner look, personally I think they look alright if you fit a coupe s arch/skirt kit, it all blends together.
http://www.germanplates.com/ is a good site for german number plates. They're not legal in the uk though, so you may want to be wary of them. You'll only get a producer if you're pulled over for them (bit of paper telling you to remove them and have it certified as legal by an MoT station), but it's a pain anyway.
Best to keep an eye on the classified sections for BBS RA's. Watch the for sale forum here and on www.porka.net, the classified section on www.polo-gt.co.uk, and ebay. A set will turn up sooner or later
Might also be worth asking karl_clcoupe on these forums, I know he had an unused set a while ago, don't know what he's done with them though.

Cool thanks for the advice everyone.I found some MSW kings 5.5x13" ET38 they look really nice and i think would go down retro really well. They should be a straight swap?I shouldn't need to get the rear wheel arches rolled?
I was also thinking of taking the front grill off and replacing it with a front grill with spot lights.
edit the wheels are already sold, damn it.

Shame those wheels sold, but they would have been a direct fit, providing the stud pattern was PCD 100 (100mm diagonally between the stud holes). Perfect offset as well.
The spot lamp grille is an easy swap, you'll probably have to bodge the wiring a touch if your car doesn't already have the wiring in place for the spots, but I think the later ones did.. if not, you just have to run two wires from each of the spots into the main headlamp plug, ask me if you need help on that and I'll get some photos of how mine are wired. Other than that, it's a straight swap and improves things no end
Just as an aside, when you get your grille, make note of whether it has red stripes, chrome stripes or no stripes at all - you may as well get the type which suits your car best, none are hard to come by
