Have any of you that also experiencing this noise have aftermarket alarms fitted to your cars, or are they standard?

She claims that she asked a VW tech about the noise, and they said it shouldn't do it, and its probably because of the alarm. They also told her that the fuel pump primes when the ignition is turned on. They think that its something to do with the fuel circuit being immobilsed by the Clifford, even though it isn't.. only the started & ignition circuit are immobilised by it.

I still don't think it has anything to do with the alarm, for the reasons you said

If the sound is 'bad' then get it checked out, but if its like a whine for a short time, its 'okay'

yeah, this is normal.... its like the sound when you turn th key before you switch on the engine.....? think its something to do with activating the electronics in the car?!
dont think its to do with the alarm, as i dnt have one :s

Yes, can confirm its the fuel pump. When the car is "activated" the pump runs for about 2-3 seconds to bring the pressure in the line up to the correct level (about 2.5 bar for you techies

) so when you turn the engine over, fuel is immediately avaiable to the injectors, and hence the engine starts immediately...i hope! BTW, if you've left the driver's door open for a while, say, while cleaning the insides out, the fuel pump will do this procedure again. It's to keep the car in readyness to start. Also, the motor on the throttle will make a click to ensure its able to move freely as well.

Only know all this guff cos I've just changed my fuel pump to something more meaty...fortunately didn't get too much petrol everywhere...thrid degree burns don't strike me as much fun. Is it time to get an extinguisher for my car?
