Not just extra air but easier air intake instead of the restrictive standard box.
Unfortunately however, I don't earn enough to spend £40 on a full tank every week with a massive intake. Thats why companies like K&N cator for people who want more air but not excessively or otherwise they'd just make kits as big as they could instead of specific car requirements.

Not saying anything against you, just pointing out the air panel filter box only allows air to pass, which has entered through the pipe. An induction kit isn't closed of, thus trying to suck in all the air around it if that makes sense.

Theyre are also restricting elements in the airbox housing. Plastic moulds and such that make the passing of air mroe difficult. Meaning the engine has to suck harder to get the air it requires I have absolutely no idea why you have these things. I just no they are there lol.

so no dirty/hot air from the engine bay enters. Also only allowing the required air for the fuel mixture setup. thats the first thing I change when get a car

which cone filters tend to do, as you say, " trying to suck in all the air around it", unless you put a heat shield on.
Ultimately the passage into the engine is designed quite carefully. For example, not only getting the right quantity of air - but ideally it should be cool and turbulent as it enters the combustion chamber. Also, wave effects in the air (caused by the valves opening and closing) must be considered in the design.
In my opinion, unless you have a highly modified engine, where a larger intake is actually required, a panel filter, drilled airbox on the cool side and removal of clutter (eg resonance pipes, cones etc) around the airbox is a good 'solution'.
