I used to run an Alpine HU running Type R speakers. better than the standard set up, and no amp needed. it was a 4x60W amp though.

Yep thats right, some of the decent Alpine H/U have 4*60 watts output which is good, but if youve also got a sub in the back it helps to have the front speakers amped because you get better sound quality, decent fronts will sound sweet if thyre getting more power, not under powered.

After much deliberation, head scratching, phone calling, message board posting...I have....re-installed the Philips speakers!....and they sound sweet enough!

Gona be a wet blanket here and from some one who is a little in to hifi, dont waste ur money on car speakers,
its one of the worst plces on earth to produce good quality music cause to the size and superpostition of waves etc! i did on my old polo only causes headaches,
be happy with the standards as they are ok and less chance of people breaking in to steal ur new headunit!
rant over

But what about something decent????

If I was to buy either of the following...at around £50-£60

JL Audio
Infinity
Rockford Fosgate

Do I need an amp in order for them to sound better than the standard speakers????
Either of the named will sound better than standard speakers, but dont expect a huge difference without amping them, ur H/U will only provide 50-60wrms to the speakers which aint enough. When u add an amp, youl notice the difference straight away, wont distort, sweet clarity, generally will sound a hell of a lot better if set up right. Get some sound deading sheets also which helps if amping.
I was pretty sure it's always the max watts that they quote to make the HU look better, as in 4x50w max, but they miss the max bit off. I've got 2 JBL and 2 Alpine Coaxials running off a standard HU, and a seperate sub+amp. It sounds excellent for everyday listening.
