since the last week my gearstick rattles when in third gear and accelerating. but if i hold it tight, it stops rattling. don't know if it's the stick itself or the gearbox. anyone got this problem? a nice addition to the dash rattles i might add :(

logistix - to be honest I'd get that seen to, dashboard rattles are annoying but not potenially dangerous, a rattle from the gearbox might be a sign of something more serious :(

Sent to Watchdog this evening, anyone else wanna join me:

Having owned the car since March last year my car has gone back to the dealer around 12 times (can get accurate records from dealer if required) for 'small' things that they seemed incompetent at repairing for example:

VIN number missing from windscreen

Drivers side headlight steaming/condensing up

Rattle/knocking from bulkhead/engine bay or back of dashboard

Rattle on centre console underneath the tray on top of dashboard

Faulty paint - roof resprayed

Rattle behind passenger airbag cover

Passenger and driver door card creaks when driving along (Believed to be window regulators)

Drivers seat squeaks when going over bumps and round corners

Rattle from passenger door/seat area

Steering geometry out (caused by VW technicians and unable to remedy after 3 attempts)
Rattle behind instrument binnacle

Alarm not sounding properly

Recirculation system on ventilation system not working properly (Happening since dash was removed to install VIN number).

Faulty suspension bushes

Faulty Air-conditioning temperature sensor(blows hot air out when set to cold).

All these have been eventually repaired except for the air-con sensor which it went in for 03/09/2004 and due to be back 08/09/2004.... I'm still waiting 3 weeks on. The last time it was in around May it was damaged on the drivers door and rear wing, this apparently was caused by a valeter who tried to cover it up with an aerosol can and was only noticed by me when i went to collect it. Last week I contacted VW UK to say I hadn't heard anything and the dealer then phoned to say there had been an accident. Apparently a customer had driven into it on the car park (damaged wing and wheel). I believe they had no intention of telling me because I contacted VW UK on 14/09/2004 and the accident happened 10/09/2004 and was already half repaired (with filler even though I was told it was a 'little scuff and scratch) when I saw it on the Tuesday.

I feel I have to complain because everytime it is booked in for 2-3 days it always turns into weeks and they NEVER phone to keep me updated and they think that it is OK to damage a customer's car twice and not bother to tell me. I have been waiting for over a week for a manager to phone me as I want them to but the car back or pay me for diminution of value for the damage caused. The service is absolutely abysmal and the quality of the car isn't much better either.

The Broon wrote: 4: Engine squeak. Has anyone else got this problem? It occurs after about 4-5 mins after start-up and immediately after start up. Give it a bit of throttle in gear then lift off the throttle and there is a noticeable squeak, every second or so for 3 or 4 times then you've got the give it more throttle and it appears again, eventually it disappears but its bloody annoyingf. I've suggested that it might be the rocker pot on the LHS of the Engine, as if you rock the engine, when off, it rings slightly, the other thing I thought it might be, is the flexible joint between the exhaust downpipe from the engine and the main exhaust, as it may be temperature related. Anyone got any thoughts?
I have the EXACT same problem on my Polo 9N.

Same 100 1.4 engine as yours and same annoying squeaky sound. When I give it a bit of gas, let it roll and simply let the engine draw the car with no power, it squeaks. It does this in pretty much all gears and I've narrowed it down to being the gas-exhaust return valve, with the help of my VW garage.

When I disable this by unplugging it (its a small green plug in the front of the engine), the squeaky sound stops. When I plug it back in, the sound returns.

The dealer has acknowledged the problem and replaced the ERG twice, but it STILL squeaks and its driving me mad..

If anyone else has a different way of solving this OR another idea about what it could be please post it.

Apart from that I've had all the faults:

* dashboard rattles
* squeaky front suspension
* engine loosing power (updated the engine ECU)
* Universal joint defective, replaced after 40K Km.
* Steering wheel wobbles
* seat belt suspension squeaks
* sprinklers replaced
* Ignition coil replaced twice

I am never, ever going to buy a Polo (or even a VW) again.

Living in denmark I had to pay 20.000 pounds for this car...

This whole thing is turning into a PR nightmare for VW. If they had a grain of common sense they'd bend over backwards to sort these problems out. Some of them aren't majorly serious but do warrant a lot of attention as they are very annoying, since getting the bushings sorted over a year ago my only real niggles have been the dashboard and steering wheel creaks. So if they'd sorted the creaks out I'd be 100% happy, but as they haven't been I'm not.

Is it me or VW seem incapable of realising that most people only get bothered by problems they notice. Imagine if your engine was knackered but you didn't notice it, you wouldn't be too bothered. Yes fixing these things will cost money but you may of lost an owner to another car company, which is worse?

No real problems, but my aircon sometimes blows hot when set to cool temps (not COLD, just close to that end of the scale).

Cheers
