If you have seen my posts before, you will know that I have some oil consumption. Its not dramatic, but it bothers me a bit. Its a 1.4 16V, and ite got 36,000 miles on it. It tends to use in the region of a cup in 1000 miles. Which according to VW is well within specification. Still I thought I would investigate.
There are no leaks to speak of, the air filter seems to get oil in it and the throttle body. So it seems to come from the breather. I think that some is fairly normal. But just incase the previous owner had buggered it, I thought I would do some more investigating. Besides with woman trouble, I always like to do something just for the sake of it.
I did a compression test, and got 15.5 14.5 15.5 15.5 for nos 1 - 4. Which is far beyond the wear limit and they are pretty equal so I'm happy that there is little if any blow-by and the bores are ok, and the valves are seating ok. It goes really well. So presumably its normal consumption.
Is there anything else I can do to stop the oil coming out the breather? Later engine codes have a special oil trap, so I am assuming that VW confirmed it to be a problem and changed the design.
