what is the most effective way to take it off....
mine has become 'impossible' to remove (by hand and with the wrench) so what other ways can i go about getting it off?

which model? the 16v ones have a hexagonal end to them so you can stick a big spanner on it.
other than that - try to get one of those "grip" things from B&Q - the levers with a loop of plastic on em - made for old people to open jars etc! anyone know what i mean?!
and a tip for when you put the new one back on - run a ring of oil around the seal with your finger before screwing it back on. but you might already know that!
