not starting gearbox prob

hope someone can give me some guidance i got a problem with my mums mk4 1.6 automatic polo.

occasionally the car wont start, i seem to have found the problem,

if it doesnt start and i wiggle the gear stick a little it will start, im guessing that it has just not registered that it is in park or neutral and their is a loose connection in there somewhere.

dont want to open it up without asking you lot if you have any ideas on what the problem is.

i found this on the internet but not sure if its the same thing:
AFFECTED MODELS: Automatic
FAULT: Engine doesn't start or stalls, possibly fault code 545 and 638 in the fault memory of the gearbox control unit.
CAUSE: Power supply relay has loose contact.
SOLUTION: Check the power supply for the carburation control unit, if necessary replace the power supply relay.
hope someone can give some input.
