i'm really intersted in a 1.6

If you put a 1.6 from a Mk4 into your car you'll get 75bhp same as a GT engine.
Problem is it won't be set up for enthusiastic driving like a GT engine, so it'll be slower to drive, however it will be more refined on the motorway due to taller gears and more cc.
Plus it'll cost you an extra £40 (IIRC) every year cos of tax over the GT and the wiring will also be a complete pain in the ass compared to a GT conversion.
If you put a 1.6 16v Bora engine in your car you get 105bhp, which is only 5bhp over the 1.4 16v Polo engine. I'd go for the 1.4 out of the two, doesn't make that much sense to go for a bigger engine that doesn't get much more power, again think road tax. However both the 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines will be an equal ballache to fit.
If you want to go 1.6, the best thing to get is a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine and 6 speed gearbox. That's 125bhp from the off, which justifies the extra road tax costs. I know I keep going on about it, but there's no point in paying extra for no gain! Problem is again you're still looking at a complete 'mare in terms of fitting it for all sorts of reasons and it still won't be as fast or easy to tune as a G40 engine.
I know this because I spent ages looking at engine conversions for mine, and decided against each one in turn. I really wanted to go 1.6 16v, then at some point whack a turbo on it. If you're wondering, TSR do this kit and it gets 185bhp out of the 1.4 16v. Think what that'd be like on a 1.6!
Really though, Gareth's got it in one, your best options are GT, 1.4 (or 1.5 - that can be done) GT or a G40. If you're feeling brave and have lots to spend then go down the 1.6 16v route but get a red top Lupo/Polo GTi engine, if possible the Lupo as I said because of some of them having a6 speed 'box. I'd love to see it done, but personally I've opted to go down the supercharged route. All weighed up it makes a lot of sense.
