i would suggest when going any lower than a 40mm drop its best to get up rated dampers, will ride much better on them.

im up 4 lowering my mk4 too. trouble is there is mixed stories about dampers. Ive heard its not good using the standard shocks at all, and im just wanting to a minor 35mm drop allround. Eibach do springs that r compatible with OE Dampers, but some guy off another forum said then my OE dampers will only last less than 12 months. im confused? but getting a complete kit is usually costly!!! what to people on this forum think???? would it be okay to do a 35mm drop on standard dampers???

A -35mm drop on standard dampers should be OK, but you have to check the state of your OE dampers when you put the new springs on - if they're in good condition you'll have no problems
AFAIK the mk4 had oil-filled dampers, apart from the 16v which had gas-filled dampers. You could try looking for some 16v dampers if you want a better ride or go all out and swap the dampers out for uprated ones - although by the time you've forked out for new springs and shocks you could have bought those coilies dubpolo has pointed out and have adjustable ride height to boot
Basically IMO, if your OE dampers are in good nick you'll be OK fitting lowering springs of up to -40mm.

si_gti thats what i thought. But i just wanna make sure that my mk4 wont have another problem waiting in the next couple of months. i mean, i have not had any problems since i bought my Polo (its rock-solid

but i want to keep it that way, i kinda like to do things once and leave it if u know what i mean
my dampers seem to be good.
ride quality, i know springs will make a difference but i dont need super ride quality or anything. im happy wid it as it is. Just wanna lower it as if i stick some rims on it it doesnt look bus high.
How hard are they to fit, cos me and my mate were thinking of trying it out ourselves??? any1 done this themselves - i think bstardchild on this forum did??

i've done springs on my old MK4, i had -40mm drop with standard shocks no probs! Coilies are easyer to fit! belive it or not! the haynes manual give you a good idea of what to do! give it a go! just make sure everything is tight! (nuts and bolts i mean!)

Just wondering if anyone has any pics of lowering 60mm and 40mm on 15 195/45's by 6.5 wide? and i presume when its said "prevents rubbing" you still get the occasional rub? and can u still get full lock? cheers

careful with the tyres tho - BF Goodrich are wider than most at 195. Mine rubbed at the back on a 60mm drop, and I had to move them to the front.
