I know some people from the Polo CLub Holland which have got 17" under their 6N / Mk4. It is possible, but their are some major problems which arise:

first of all, your overall speed will drop, and acceleration will been slown down also, cause with 17" your engine willhave problems getting your car in motion
second, with 17" on your front wheels, when you steer, they will hit the inner-side of the wheelhousing (place in where your wheel is placed, sorry don't know the correct english word for it)
third, their will be trouble if you have lowered your Polo more then 40mm (of even less, depending on the size of your tyres)

And to avoid even more problems, don't get 17" which are wider then 7" (or 7J) or else they will hit the carrosserie even faster.
