tricky decision
i have been offered one of the older mercs (190) for under 200 quid that is mechanically perfect but some areas of the body are not perfect. should i bother looking at insurance prices and possibly think about getting it? if you think its too cheep to be true then dont worry as its a work collegue who imho is an amazing mechanic so i have total confidence in him and his car.
the reason im asking is that if i were to get it then i could take the polo off the road for a few weeks at a time to do work and just drive the merc. as for long trips, comfort here i come. please dont tempt me with modding ideas as i want it to stay standard
heres a quick spec:
2.0 normally aspirated 8V single core carb (petrol)
5 spd manual tranny with RWD
4 door white
saloon
steel wheels with good tyres (fitted them my self )
almost identical to this one /\
if this one /\ doesnt work blame members.lycos
/\ mmmmm merc + amg+nurenburg hehe
spot any dubs?

Yeah, get it!
Reminds me of a Buju Banton song... "a 190 E Benz 'im bring down, sella de most cr@ck, the c@ke, h@roin or opi@m...." (meaning that drivers of said Benzos are big drug dealers hehehehe)
I thought about getting a nice looking Jetta for £299 that's for sale in my village, but then thought again... I can't afford it!

same position as me jiosh cos if i get this then ive got to insure it etc so i wont be doing any thing to the polo this month or next but i figure that if i use it as a daily driver then as long as i keep it stock then itll cost me less because with it being bigger its a lot less chuckable so parts and fuel should last longer even with it being a 2.0 as i wont have to thrash it as much

Insurance probably more than the cost of the car, but at £200 you can't say no.
May even get more than £200 for it when you sell it.
Be careful bout Mod Fever.
A bit of trim here or new wheels there.
Before you know it you could be sucked into that Stuttgart Styling Thing and I don't reckon it's cheap as chips !!!!!!!!

i did a little digging today and found this lot out:
216,000 Km (not much for a merc of this age)
bugger all option wise (no power windows or locks etc) not important as its a beater
first owner a fully qualified merc mechanic
2nd owner is my mate at work
complete new exaust
and the list of pros continues
the cons are:
missing front merc symbol
slight starting problem thats prolly cureable with a new fuel filter

just got a very rough insurance quote with axa (who the polo and my dads a class are with) and for a 2.0 merc 190 (1983) guestimated at about 110 hp steel wheels, kept off the road but not garage (not visible from the road though) 19 years old with 5 years no claims (some got transfered to me ) no points etc and pass plus
bearing in mind that my polo (1.4 8v) with every mod declared costs about €1500 (bout 1100 quid) with all mods insured to half their value and seperate insurance policies for all ice and wheels which are included in that price (both policies are to a max value of about 20,000 quid combined) and all insurance is fully comp
the 190 on the above info just got me quoted €1116 (about 700 quid) on tpft
WTH thats stupid!!!
