Lowering / Air Filter Query

Post by gwbjs »

Anybody know if anyone does 15mm lowering springs for the GTi and how much they cost? I think I read that DMWright's car was dropped just 15mm and that would be perfect for me as I don't want to have worry about bottoming out on speed bumps etc............. :!:

Also, was thinking about getting a new filter. These BMC CDA's seem to be popular but expensive and I was wondering what other good ones you guys had / how much they cost. Used to have a K&N on my 205 gti whichb sounded nice but didn't do anything noticeable to the power.... :?

I've had no problems at all with 35mm h&r springs. I dont think 15mm would be worth the effort personally

imo 15 mm just wouldn't be worth it, you'd gain more rigidity anyways for speedbumps etc. Mine is dropped quite far on coilys (estimate about 50mm) and is still fine for speed bumps, just need to be gentle

Had a BMC on my honda and they are VERY loud, and as the Polo sounds nice standard i think it'd be very tasty afterwards, however not the cheapest... :P

swings and roundabouts an all that :P

its all about the BMC !!

When i bought mine it was like £160 not sure if theve gone down now, you do get a right poo cold air feed with it though, looks like its made out of hardened cardboard !!! haha bit poor for that price if u ask me.

I stole a cold air feed from an odd Pipercross air filter (for god knows what car). It was made of some heat resistant material and bends and flexes nicely into place.

I cant rate the BMC highly enough, it simply sounds fantastic on the Polo.

You find yourself playing with it though, as you would :-p haha Sometimes i like to change gear too early on purpose to get a deep growl out of it when i accelerate. The BMC really does gargle nicely at low revs and then when you open it up, the change of tone really does sound good, it deffo makes the car quicker for sure !

Ive beaten so many 2ltr motors etc its unreal, also managed to tan a few auto 2.5 Beemers ! hah My polo also keeps up with my g/f's 2.3ltr Topless Merc with SMG gearbox, so cant be that bad innit !

I can personally gurantee that you wont be dissappointed with the BMC

save your cash and go for it ! at the end of the day, like my dad used to tell me "you get what you pay for son"

If the bmc is £160 and the K&N is £70. . .what would you think is better?

Thanks for the offer mate I did get it on, had it on for a week now but as the only way I can mount it is above the intake manifold, it can't really see a way to get a decent cold air feed. If not connected up to a feed the bmc sounds awesome but just sucks in warm air, but if I just connect it to the wing where the stock air pipes were, there is cold air there but not really a decent supply of it and the bmc hardly makes a noise :? I spent yesterday getting tubing from the bmc down to the passenger side foglight intake, but the problem is the tubing to there is now 2 metres long ! I just want a decent amount of cold air for the bmc with a feed that isn't too long ?

sorry for the thread highjack

btw gwbjs a K&N panel filter with the stock airbox on the gti gave me a more responsive engine and better low down pull if you're looking for something not too expensive, and H&R 35mm springs as people have already said would give you better handling but you wouldn't really have to worry about speedbumps etc !

Cheers Prash and no probs about the hijack  May well go for a k&n first to see what it's like. As for the springs, seems like 35mm may be an option. I'm not really bothered about the ride height of the car it's just the handling needs a bit of stiffening.....It's the only part of the car I'm not too impressed with. Having said that I'm comparing it to my old 205 1.9 Gti that was lowered 40mm on Koni's..... :?

Ive got mine going to the 'stock' cold air feed hole by the wheelarch, the Tube that ive got is very mallable and will tend to stay in wotever position u placed the pipe, to be totoally honest i would prefer to have done something a bit better like having a vent in the wing or something like that. The BMC sounds fine though and performance is improved, but maybe with a better placement of it, even more cold air would get into it.

Not really sure what im going to do with it, its fine where it is, but like u say im sure there are better ways of doing it.

Maybe doing something with the grille at the front? waht you think ?

Think i'm just going to feed the cold air tube into the wing for nowlike you Calvin until I can poke around properly to find a decent area, i'm sure its possible some how  think the radiator and all the plastic behind the grille might be a bit of a problem for placing the feed to the grille, but who knows.

ps gwbjs if you do get the K&N panel filter, make sure you get the one with product code '33-2774', I originally got a different one that many places listed for the polo gti but it was actually the wrong one. The K&N website have updated it to the correct one I think but some companies who sello them still list the incorrect one
