Exhaust emission lamp stays on, any thoughts?? anyone

Hi all
"The exhaust emission lamp" stays on whilst driving my 1.4 16v
Handbook say's I should take it to a volkswagen dealer!

If anyone can shed a bit light on this little light on my instrument panel I would be greatly appreciatted!

I had the same problem, turned out to be a faulty cooling fan... hook the cooling fan upto the battery directly using a peice of wire and if it doesnt come on its fooked!
