Mileage and Age

Post by andyg »

I've had my Gti about 7 months now and I still love driving it. I was wondering what mileage everyone has done in theirs so far. Im currently at 61k.

I think the design of the GTi and the extras it has will keep it looking good even when its 10 years old (some cars age badly). What kind of mileage can you expect from the GTi assuming you look after it? Has the engine been used in other VW's previously?

I bought mine in September 2003 with 51k on the clock, and it's now got nearly 66k after two and a half years :) and hopefully the engine should last at least another 100k miles barring any catastrophes! As far as I know the 1.6 16v wasn't used in this state of tune (125bhp) in any other VW model, but a detuned version of around 90bhp (ish) may have seen service in Boras/Golfs/Beetles possibly? Although I think they were 8-valve units...

so because they were so highly tuned - does this mean they've got a shorter lifespan?

No, I don't think that a stock GTi engine would have a shorter lifespan than any other VAG powerplant. As I understand it, all manufacturers build their engines within certain tolerances and test them long and hard to make sure that they will stay the distance. As Phill says, a looked-after car might reach 200,000 miles with no trouble at all. Some other engines might not be so fortunate, it all depends on how they have been maintained AFAIK. Regular oil and fluid changes, a driver who adapts his/her style to the character of the engine, that kind of stuff. For example trying your utmost not to rev the engine above 3000 revs before it has been properly warmed up :)

properly warmed up? now is that a length of time, or is it purely when your oil temp gauge is where it should be, norm take about 5 or so min on mine

Yeah in my eyes its when the temperature guage has risen to normal operating temperatures, about halfway or so isn't it. Takes only a few minutes on mine too :D

yep, indeed coolant temperature... the gauge moves to about half way or so, best not to drive 'crazy' till it reaches there
