Hi.
I've got a Mk 5 GTI. Can anyone tell me where the fuse for the engine radiator cooling fan is located? I think its blown & the fan is not working so the engine over-heats when the car is standing still, say in traffic jams.
I presume the fue is in the fuse box but is the fuse box located in the engine bay or located somewhere else.

Hi, sorry your wagon is playing up.
The fuse you should check is one in the engine compartment, attached to the battery. It's a 20A fuse (and I think I'm right in saying its the only one of those there) soyou should be able to check if its OK with minimum of fuss.
If the fan is working alright (and its easy to check by connecting a 9V battery across the terminals) then its the switch that's kaput. Not the easiest of tasks as the switch is mounted in the radiator...that means draining the coolant from the system first. But...it's doable and will certainly be cheaper than having those money-grabbers at VW do it for you!

solentgreen My cooling fan went too. Its just a case of replacing it im affraid. £80 from europarts, very easy to fit. If you need any more info lemme know

Problems with colling fan
Hello Misterminty & polosilver,
Many thanks for your replies which was very helpful. In the end, I really had to rack my brains to figure out the problem as on further investigation, I found that the fan would work when the engine was cold but stopped working when it got up to normal temperature. I was thinking and getting worried that it may be some obscure difficult to trace electrical fault. In the end, I did as you suggested and connected the fan direct to a supply when it was warm & not working & it still did not budge. I also did the same when cold & it turned. So in the end, it was the fan.
